You go to a "free retest" place. They WANT you to pass. Smog checks are required every 2 years, and I had my cat on at the time.

This was an old downpipe I had modified and botched up. The good cat is sitting in my garage waiting for re-test day

One of those "mysteriously appearing and disappearing" cats?

Word is CHP is actually doing roadside inspections (not common but supposedly they still do it from time to time) for illegal mods. Basically anything that doesn't have a CARB Exemption number is illegal, removal of any emissions equipment (including the cat) is illegal, etc. Fines are pretty big.

I also remember reading that they're currently testing roadside detection equipment that will be able to measure (roughly) a passing vehicle's emissions. If you trigger it, they can pull you over and investigate. The latest chapter in the cat & mouse game. . .

I ran a Bursch header with cat pipe for a long time and was never so happy when I went back to stock. Not only quieter, the power band moved back to where I could actually use it.

Sure, the header and cat pipe made more power, but it was all at higher RPMs. No help, even softened the botton end and mid range.

I did not like the sound quality. Might be better with the stock headers.

My nickel . . . .

I'm gonna get a cheater-cat. Already put the Flowmaster on. Of course I have my own pipe bender so what does it matter if I need new pipe? I'll just make it myself. Hmm...maybe I could make a few bucks offering a Flowmaster 944 kit? Anyone interested?

hmm. I think I would delete the muffler before the cat; and then just get a racing cat if that isnt good enough. Catalytic converters are good things.

strike-force, how's the flowmaster sound on the 944? Which series did you use?

I've heard one before, but it was a racing muffler, and it was REAL loud, and too high-pitched.
