Mechanics sure earn their money..........
Well... what would have taken my mechanic 45 minutes..took me 3 hours...
Replacing a simple oil pressure sending unit.
First the sucker was on too tight for simple hand wrenches..tried 3..
Then went to the parts store for an open ended 26 mm..
Of course the thing is a foot long... so the front sway bar is right in the way so i could noy get the angle right to get on the nut....on my back..dirt falling in my eyes.....loosened the bolts holding sway bar on,, just to get a "little"
Then i finally got it,, if all else fails..use a hammer) ...so the oil comes out heavy..
I had the new one ready to plug right back in but...of course its longerthan the original,, so the connection pins hit some brass looking line right in the way...(count to 10)
Let her drain out...
Loosened the brass line..got it on...then of course the same problem in reverse. The huge freakin wrench would not get the angle right...so i had to use a combination of the 26 mm elephant and a hand held lock jaw..
I feel like I've been beat on with an ugly stick!!!!!!!!!
I should have paid the $100....I could have watched Oprah while somebody else did it..............

Dr Phil is a minion to Satan.. Uh, I mean Oprah.
As Jerry would say.. my mangina hurts!!
I agree, sometimes it's best to call in a pro. I've done it and peace of mind was worth the $$$ as he was able to fix things I could not in much less time than I would have spent.

Jobs are always easier when you have a lot more tools at your disposal. having the correct offset wrench for that job makes it a 15 minute ordeal.

Johnny: thanks for sharing your frustration. My sending unit is on its last legs. I'm seriously debating on what to do... I'm still new to wrenching, so the possibility of a F*-up is almost guaranteed on my part... In retrospect, do you suggest I get a pro to do it and suck up the $75/hr fee?
Thanks, Chase

i bought the crows foot for the job from sears. it still takes some time to to use, but i messed for 2 days before i bought it. so an hour is better than 2 days. mine was also longer then original, and mine was regular replacement from either tweeks or performance products.

I am a VW tech and I can appretiate your compliment.
I do all my own wrench work.. and let me tell you..the
944 is a pita compared to any VW. Well.. maybe except
the Touareg.
I am finding myself already ordering factory tools
for my 944 just to make it easier on myself.

Let me chime in on this. I am in the process of replacing all of my front seals in my 88 944S. I was going to do the job myself, got the manuals, good selection of tools etc... My neighbor who is a Nissan Mechanic has been helping me and while it is good to be doing the work myself, if he wasn't here I would have thrown in the towl. Good mechanics are worth their weight in gold let me tell you.
