It's probably the original unit and yes, it would probably be dead by now. Check the "search" feature and look for "antenna" in the 924/944 forum option. Lots of past posts about them!

If yours is shot, look on ebay, theres a couple of people selling the chrome and black, manual and power replacements for less than $40.00. I don't think you can even buy the original hirshmann antenna any longer. But you might want to check and make sure an inline antenna fuse didn't blow. IIRC, some head units are installed with this fuse as part of the wiring package on the back of the unit.

the antenna is a shiny black one. I was thinking of putting a small flex antenna there instead.

Whatever is your personal preference, but like Ken says comparable replacements can be had for not much money. Some people fit Fuba style antennas on the roof, too, but those are easily stolen.

The stock unit is mounted inside the the driver side fender, behind the emissions canister. To remove it, it's best to raise the front end of the car on jackstands and remove the left front wheel. Drop the canister without disconnecting the tubes, and you have access to remove the antenna unit. (Do a search for more info).

Good luck with it!

I just got in a Hirshmann replacement from Performance Products for $19.99. It's manual, but it's what I wanted. The box is in German. They have the power one for $125.

I know Travis at www.rennbay.com has the Fuba replacements, I think they look better, and have better AM/FM reception. It is, of course, up to you. Mine has been stuck in the UP position since I've owned it. Too lazy to fix it- it still works fine.
