Default balance shaft oil leak fixed

woo hoo!! i pulled the upper balance shaft cover off yesterday (see this thread ), thinking it may have a minor leak, with the major leak being the oilpan. resealed everything with a lot of loctite red, reused the essentially new orings and seals, and drove it about 30 miles today.

no leaks!! before, it was dripping off the oilpan about every 10 seconds, a fairly major leak. now, it's not even running down the oilpan. sweet!! i still have a minor leak at the back of the oilpan that runs onto the exhaust and burns off, but nothing to keep me from driving the car.

so, just to add the volume of info on resealing the balance shaft covers for future reference, i pulled it off, cleaned both sealing surfaces with acetone, did NOT resurface either mating surface (i asked about that yesterday), applied lots of loctite red to the cover itself, and used the same rear plug and oring with the same front oring and seals i got in the rebuild kit, then torqued it down to specs.

hosrom951 - i know you're about to do this soon, but if you have the correct tools and lots of patience, you can do it.

Did any of those fumes from the burning oil enter the cabin?

i've had the burning fumes in the cabin since before the engine blew. in fact, it's still there and really annoying. i'm wondering how to fix it. any ideas? i don't have an under-hood exhaust leak. in fact, the whole exhaust system is leak free. i don't know where it's coming from, but it smells like burnt oil

How's the seal on top of the firewall? Mine is pretty crappy and I do notice more exhaust fumes than before. I'm thinking of wiring in an on/off switch for the fan so it doesn't suck in air from that area.

my firewall seal looks pretty good, but i don't know how well it's actually sealing. i have considered just removing all the blower stuff under the hood anyway since i don't have a/c. but some heat would be nice at times.

hmm.....how hard is it to remove all that blower stuff under the hood?
