Default balance shaft cover leaking

i've already searched the archives. i've got the upper balance shaft cover off and am going to reseal it with loctite red.

has anybody resurfaced the cover surface before resealing? ie, similar to having the head resurfaced?

clarks garage doesn't say anything about it. i'm just wondering if it was a bad surface

This should help

https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/176033-upper-crakcase-cover-balance-shafts.html

I still haven't tackled the problem yet, waiting for some exhaust wraps to wrap up the manifold while i do that job

PS I dont think that you should resurface the mating surface at all........doesn't sound right

lol, yea i was a part of that thread and have read it again several times. this will be the second time to try to seal this balance shaft cover. first time the engine was out. now it's in. took me about three hours this time to get the intake manifold, belts, and pulleys and rollers off far enough to remove the cover. i'm getting faster having done this several times now.

i'm not even completely sure the cover was leaking, but with the engine running i could see oil accumulating on the top part of the oil pan, and it looked like it was leaking from up above; the only place there would be the upper balance shaft cover.

i guess i'm not going to have the cover resurfaced, nobody has ever said anything about that. just going to use lots of f**king loctite and maybe some epoxy around the rear seal.

There is a aluminum plug with an O-ring at the rear of the balance cover, also the oil filler/separator has 2 O-rings. Both will give the oil residue on the side of the oilpan. The O-rings are like 2 bucks ea. Sorry, I don't have the part#s available right now. Even if it doesn't appear to be them, the same parts have to come off to do them, might as well "while you're in there" them, lol. Good luck

Unless you have a 951, then you need to remove the turbocharger, which is done in 5 hours if you are REALLY good

i have already removed and reinstalled the intake manifold last week just to tighten the plug on the side of the balance shaft cover. kept leaking so i pulled the manifold off again. it's not the rear plug or oil filler tube - all those seals are completely new .

i ended up reinstalling the cover today with a mass of loctite. i'm down to about 8 hours now to remove everything and reinstall it. hell, i might as well open up a mechanic shop
