Default Help with removing cam chain tensioner 16v

I am trying to remove the tensioner. I am having problems compressing the tensioner so I can remvoe it.

Clarks-garage reads: compress chain with hand, slide allen wrench through hole on side of tensioner over plastic ramp.

I can not get the tensioner to compress that far.

Anyone have any tips on how to do this.

Thanks.

Yea, I had trouble with this too; unforunately I have not done it for awhile. Compressing the tensioner is rather difficult, but it can be done. This may mean using lots of pressure to make it happen. Did you remove the oil pipe? I remember having to move the tensioner around (i think i remember it not clearing something) some to compress, and having to use my entire body weight (145) to fully compress.

BE VERY CAREFUL! If you didn't cover the oil gallies then be mega careful with the banjo bolts and washers. I dropped a banjo bolt into the head one time, and only after about an hour with a magnetic tool did I get it out.

on the parts car I needed 2 sets of hands to do this efficiently (probably could have done it myself if I had applied sufficient swearing and bloodloss). With the unit still fully bolted in, I took a 2 foot long pine 2x4 and handed it to my mom, and asked her to use it to push down on the tensioner with it (actually pushing on the chain above the tensioner). Once it compresed far enough, I quickly pushed two finishing nails thru the holes on the side (another rennlister I saw used finishing nails to hold it) Let off on the 2x4, lifted up on the chain, and pushed the nails through the rest of the way. They are still holding the pad down very nicely. On the oil feed pipe, you have to completely remove it not jsut disconnect from the tensioner.

Thanks, I finally got it. I had to have another set of hands.

I was afraid to put that much pressure on it.
