What's the correct level for the coolant? Should it be cold on the minimum mark or can it be on the maximum mark.
I've had it above minimum and it keeps dropping, now I've topped it up to maximum. I've recently had a new waterpump and coolant reservoir installed. The old reservoir was ok, but I couldn't see the level anymore.
Now that I can see the level I am even more paranoid about it.
Thanks for any replies.

I tend to have it sitting between the max and minimum marks when cold. According to the book, the cooling system can hold about 8 liters of coolant. Are you still loosing coolant? Leaking anywhere or is it burning off?

I am not a 100% sure if it's leaking. Because I may not have checked the level at a consistent temperature. Iin a couple of days I will get under the car and change the alternator belt and check the right engine mount. There is also still a drip from somewhere that needs to be tracked down. This will be a good time to check for obvious coolant leaks. I'd really prefer a hose to the oil cooler. There is no oil in the water or water in the oil, so I am not too concerned at this stage. Maybe it's still settling down after the waterpump pchange.

When cold it is supposed to be at the minimum mark. As you run the car the heat causes the fluid to expand, so therefore when it is hot the level should be at the maximum mark. That is esentially the idea of the two markings on the overflow tank. They are specifically marked for cold level (min.) or hot level (max.).
