Default Rear window 944=968?

Hi,

The rear window on my 968 exploded.
The quote from Porsche for a new one was silly.
I tried to find a window from a breaker but the only one I found was from a 944S2-91.
Will that window fit?

Best regards

Anders

If that S2 had the rear bridge-type spoiler like the 968 (which I think all of them did in 1991), then it should work. Good luck!

If you are using your frame then, yes, the glass is all the same.

How the heck did it explode?

OK, great, I will then get the window from the S2.
My guess is that the rear hatch wasn’t closed properly; someone (me) closed it by pressing in the left corner and not in the middle.
I had to catch a taxi and went of travelling. A friend called me after 2 weeks and told me that the car had exploded.

Thank you all.
You have saved my weekend.

Best regards

Anders

The 91 S2 hatch assembly will have a different location for the 3rd brake light and the wiring is different. But again, if you are only replacing the glass within your existing hatch frame, and not the whole hatch, you should be fine.

It's doubtful that he will have the third brake light issue, look at his location.
Again, the whole hatch will work provided that it has the bridge spoiler mounting holes in it.

The glass is the same, the hatch frame is different. If you are gonna go to the trouble to fix it, you may as well get it resealed so that you aren't dealing with delam issues as well.

Yep, I missed the location. 3rd light - no issue.

The other difference, that I forgot to mention, between the 968 hatch and the 91 S2/Turbo hatch is the two latch/lock assemblies and seals.

The 968 has a different seal for the latches that screws down to the body frame. On the older 944 rubber spoiler hatches, the seal is part of the latch/lock housing screwed to the hatch frame. The 91 S2 has a different part number for the latch/lock assembly than either the older 944 style or the newer 968. I have not seen a 91 spoiler up close to see what the difference is.

My guess is that the 968 latches can be removed from the old frame and used to replace the assemblies on the replacement S2 frame. But I dont know for certain that the bolt pattern is the same. Anyone know?

RoW Part Numbers:

968 Hatch Frame Assembly 968 512 929 00
Hatch Wiring Harness 951 612 065 01
Latch/Lock Housing 944 512 021 03
Latch seal 944 512 465 02

91 S2 Hatch Frame Assy 951 512 929 00
Wiring harness 477 971 345 A
Latch Housing 944 512 033 03

Pre 91 Latch Housing 944 512 033 01

I can confirm that the latches from a 968 frame will bolt right up to a 944/951 hatch without any problem. They are shaped slightly differently, but it works fine. I have a set installed on my 951 right now.

Scott,

If you have the 968 latch housings on a 951, are you using the 968 seals, or no gasket/seal at all (like I am right now)? Do you know the difference between the '91 part and previous MY latch housings?

I have a 968 hatch on an 89T and do not want to use the 968 seals (I dont want to put screw holes in the body of the car). I was planning on using the earlier latch housings that have the integral seal, but not sure if I should use the -01 part (up thru '90) or buy the -03 part for the '91 cars.

Buckshot,

What exactly are you looking for? Just the 968 hatch frame only, or would you be interested in a 968 hatch/glass assembly w/o the spoiler and trim pieces? I have a stripped 968 hatch/glass assembly in my attic, needing some TLC. Nothing Im willing to crate and ship, but since youre in central WI, thought I would ask if youre up for a road trip?

BigRed,

Last time I had a hatch glass/frame quoted by a dealer, it was a hair over $3000.

Hi all,

I will order some new seals/gaskets for the 968 and then install the window.
I have a friend with a 944S2 race project, I convinced him that a plastic window is better; I will buy his “glass” window so that he could get a better race car :-)
Its kind of fun, Porsche wanted to have $4653 for the hatch; and it wasn’t possible to buy just the window.
I could use the insurance, but the excess was 35%, a new (used) window is cheaper.
I don’t like when cars are self destructing, I hope that the new window is better.

Thanks

Anders

Mine has a crack in it, Porsche quoted NZD6000. Soooooo I told my insurance company the 968 one fits and I can get one for a third of the price... Oh no excess either... all free including fitting. Life is good.
