Default Anone installed a double DIN stereo in their 944?

Since my 944S will stay a street car now that the 928 is on it's way to becomming a track car - I'm thinking about differet items to install.
I remember a number of years ago, a friend of mine who is an incredible custom stereo installer was looking over my 944. He said the opening was more than enough for a double DIN unit, but due to the angle might not be enought depth (before the torque tube tunnel is hit).

Anyone install one of these?

I doubt that it would fit. The bottom half is very shallow due to the angle. The deck would have to be really shallow.
I have the factory Blau EQ that fits in the cubby area and it's only about 4" or 5" deep. Anything deeper than that probably wouldn't fit.

Let me find the pic... Pioneer makes a double din radio that is deeper at the top then the bottom by about 3 inches. I think it would fit perfectly.

I hate Pioneer - oh well, beggers can't be choosers. They do sponsor F1, so they've got that going for'em.

Uh, why would you want double DIN unless youre going to get one of those ones that has tape, cd, and a blender all crammed into it? And this is the modern age, tape is dead. Even most of the DVD players with screens built in are a DIN unit.

MD + CD = GOOD THING

Nothing wrong with Pioneer. Much better than a lot of Blau's everyone always raves about..

As Serge put it - some come with MD. I also suspect in the near future there will be DD units with Compact Flash cards for MP3. Also, the DD units will full screens are a lot nicer than the units that have the screen slide out / up. That way you always have the screen showing, and they don't cover up any controls. Most new DD units are GPS units as well. My 944 will probably be my road trip car once back on the road. I'd like to put in a GPS or even a satalite radio unit. Kenwood makes a duel purpose satalite / GPS unit that is DD.

I used to sell home audio equipment - Pioneer Elite and Sony ES are some awesome units, their "main stream" equipment was junk. So that is where my opinion of Pioneer came from. I've always been an Alpine junke.

I have a touchscreen that is double din size, but it is mounted in the dash.
you may consider getting the system and mount JUST the face in the dash an mount the GUTS in the glovebox. Take Cat5 cable and use it to connect the 2 connections.

I look at these a few months ago... te only ones I could find has tape decks. Obviously there is a begger range now. Personaly, I would get a large LCD screen unit to take advantage of the space.

NZ, here is a navigation unit:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-hj6WSNp...rch=double+din

I'm going to look into the screen idea as well / mounting guts in the glove box. My friend has done these types of installes before. He went as far as mounting an Alpine deck behing his dash, used ribbon cable's to mount the face of the stereo in the roof of his Golf at a 45 degree angle pointing down. Sweet setup, PIA to install.

I'd almost want to do some kind of setup where the screen was easily removable for security reasons. A big screen in the dash is asking for a break-in. With the two side compartments hiding sub / amp is no problem in the 944. The two 12" ppi subs are not staying in my 944. Extreem overkill for that car.

Silly Hacker! Most people use SD (secure digital) cards for mp3 players. CompactFlash cards are usually just seen in canon digital cameras!

Maybe an idea to start an ICE thread asking for peoples ideas and vendors products.
