also another thing to consider. this car will weigh 1/2 of what a 944 does. you wont need that much power to make it feel scary. with all that weight of a 944 (if you could do it).. well it would put the tail happiness of an early 911 to shame.

a strong type 4 will be plenty fast for a car that light. (as well as keep it more balanced)

A little research would go a long way, the VW engine and the 356 engine are very similar, eventually the VW type 4 engine was used in the 914. The 944 engine, OTOH, has absolutely nothing in common with either of these once you get past the 4-stroke/4cylinder part. Have you thought about where to put a radiator in a 356?

Sure this would work! Come on guys, lets be serious here. You would mount the engine in the cabin! You would sit in the rear and have an extended steering wheel! Perfect!

Dave,

The radiator goes in the front of the car, and long pipes feed back to the engine in a Subby engine put in some replicas.

I don't recall a lot of airflow in the front end of a 356. Were some sort of grilles/louvers installed or was air ducted from underneath the car? In the case of the latter option I imagine that the front luggage compartment would be quite a bit smaller (Would a spare tire fit?) but it beats the asthetics of the former option.

spare tire and gas tank go in trunk... enopugh room for some luggage too..

the engine was cooled by air being suck up near the gear box from the bottom. an oil cooler was under the fan shrowd which is not seen in this diagram (oil cooler is the long tall thing sticking up by the oil filter housing in this diagram)

the fan (also not shown) sucks air in and blows it on the oil cooler.

as you can see here is a 356 motor in a 356.. not much room

sorry got a call at work..

ANYWAYS.. a radiator could be fit a few different ways. underneatth the car (ie at an angle behind the bumper), in a wheel well if small enough..

the key would be to take a page from the factory when they did their external oil coolers.

Thanks Hoffman, I'm familiar with the aircooled motors. I was wrenching on aircooled VWs in the late 70's and modifying watercooled VWs in the early 80's when you had to modify Audi parts yourself to make 'em fit.
In this case I was wondering how to fit the 944 sized radiator in the nose of the 356 replica with ducting for airflow and if there would still be enough space left for tank and tire (for obvious reasons, one would delete the spare before doing away with the tank ). Do the Subie conversions use come oddball shape radiator what takes up very little space?

here are picks aof the porscharu 912. remember though.. more room in a 912 for this kinda stuff than in a 356.. so i dont know what the best lay out wouild be,,. but it can be done.

radiator (dont know why its by the exhaust.. would be worried about head from it).

if you have questions check out the renegade forum on 912bbs.org and ask for steve d.

here it is running (no muffler as you can see.. just pipes)

Yeah, gotta agree with the group here. You can build a HOT Type4 motor that will run with a third of the maintenance of a watercooled 944 motor. Nothing against the 944's, but even if I were to build a front-engined kit car (like a Catterham 7, for instance), I'd go with a 2 liter Honda or something.

Here's my question, Ken. Why go with a kit? Why not adopt a needy 914 that needs some TLC? Then you really DO get the best of all worlds. A Porsche; not a replica. A ROOF (pretty handy during thunderstorms), AND a Targa for nice days. Sprinkle some Carrera goodies on the suspension and brakes and you'd be the bee's knees, man. Probably come out for a LOT less cash to boot. Just my 2 bits...
