Default 944 Speedster Conversion - Possible?

A (VW enthusiast) had an idea for my 944. Since - I am unhappy with putting so much $$$ into a car that would only be worth $5,000 - $6,000 tops, EVER..... He thought of converting it to a 50's era 356 Porsche Speedster Replica. Buying the body kit, minus the VW engine and using the 944 engine instead, and bits of what ever else works. (Brakes, ect..)

Questions: What, if anything would work.

Please understand it's only a thought and I am not mech. inclined. most work would be done by others. Just putting out a feeler from some of you who are more literate than I on such a transformation. I am beginning to look online and to educate myself on the kits and it doesn't seem to be many with 944 engines anywhere. They are using 912 engines and VW engines - probably for maint. costs!

My maint. costs would still be the same using the 944 engine vs. the VW, however it would be quite a neat little car!

do a google search for images of 944, get a good side view (plenty to chose from) then do the same search for 356 speedster (again plenty) paste the two pics next to each other... Do you really see this working???

Just the 944 engine only guys...not the frame or body. Just putting the 944 engine in a 356 replica rear end. NOT USING THE 944 FRAME AND PUTTING A 356 BODY ON IT!

I guess my only question then would be WHY? Go with the V-Dub engine...

I doubt it would fit, and the car wouldnt handle nearly as well with that enormous topheavy hunk that is the 944 engine. Go with the flat 4, you will be happier. If you dont want to use the VW flat 4, source a porsche flat 4 or 6, or even a subaru one.

no way would it fit. have you ever seen the engine compartment of a 356?!?

if you want it to have a porsche engine get a 912 or a 356 engine. warning.. $$$$ to build it. to do it right yourself.. look at about 4k. to have a shop do it.. about 7k. (and this is if you supply a complete good core). you can find a good complete core in need of a rebuild for about 1700 to 2000.

no.. cost has nothing to do with it if they put a 912 engine in it. they put it in there because its more powerful than a stock vw. (and its correct).

notonly that but these engines are also very different from vw engines.. so if someone else does it for you have it done by a wrench who knows porsches, specifically the 356 engine. not a vw mechanic. there are alot of reasons for this.. if you want me to get into it i can.. but ill save space for now and only do so if asked.

if youre serious.. sell the 944, and lets go shopping for a speedster kit car. heres the 1st place to look.

http://thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/s...ords=speedster

if you want to put a 912 engine or a 356 engine in it, and a 901 gear box let me know and i can point you in the right direction.

if you wanna throw a hopped up vw in it.. i can help you there as well. (got into porsches because i grew up with vee dubs). hows a 180 hp type 4 sound? type 4 was used in 914s.. it will fit.. and it can be beefed up with not too much trouble. (and inexpensive). i forgot to mention that.. so yes.. you could have a porsche engine in it (all be it one used in 914s not 356s)
