Default OPRV where's Waldo?

87S, the OPRV bolt is on the oil filter housing correct?

Can someone tell me where the OPRV bolt is? Front, rear, side? Remove the heat shield to get to it? Allen or hex bolt?

I was just looking at mine and only found a hex bolt about 22mm.,, that I would have to remove a ps hose or possibly the pump to get to.

A pic would really help if someone could do that.

I'm sorry I don't have a pic, but the bolt is located on the bottom part of the oil cooler housing. I don't think it's a 22mm, maybe like 17 or 19 IIRC. I don't think the heat shield blocks it, and moving the PS pump out of the way will definately make the job easier. Hope this helps.

Ok, that helps, I thought it was on the oil FILTER housing, not the oil COOLER housing. DOH...! I could've looked in the wrong place for a week... Thanks.

It is a 24mm hex head.

If it's a 24mm hex head, I must have been thinking of something else. I was thinking of the bolt that holds down a spring and mini piston, in the bottom of the oil cooler on my 944. My car doesn't have an oil filter housing, the oil filter just screws into the top of the oil cooler housing. Maybe you were talking about your 944S which is different? Maybe I'm nuts?

You can see a picture of the OPRV on a turbo under the oil seal procedure on my site:

The housing is a bit different on the turbo, but it may help to see one. The OPRV should be 24mm on your car. The piston/spring thing at the bottom of the cooler housing sounds like the OPRV to me. It should be 24mm across the flats.

Waldo is in OH, famous for their bologna sandwiches.

I replaced my OPRV and seals while I had my engine out for clutch, motor mounts, etc. After re-installing the engine and starting it back up, I had an upper-engine oiling problem because I didn't use the alignment tool. I had so much trouble getting to the OPRV/Oil cooler bolts (and so much fun R&R'ing my engine) that I pulled the motor again just to re-do the oil cooler job. So, hopefully, you only have to get at the OPRV bolt. :-)

OK so I was thinkin of the right thing, but I still can't remember using a 24mm socket... and I did this job just 2 months ago. I'm going senile.

Its pretty easy to get at the OPRV with the front passenger side wheel off of the car. You can go in through the wheel well and with an 8' extension have a full range of motion for the ratcheting action.

Sure is......

Update, 15/16 bolt accessed through passenger wheel well was the one. OPRV turned out to be clean but missing the outside O-ring.

Paul,
Make sure the old o-ring isn't stuck at the bottom of the housing. Use a dental pick or fine wire, it has to be somewhere.

Being the outermost O-ring the inside O-ring would have pulled it out when the OPRV came out, the crush washer was also missing so I'm thinking someone just didn't know it took 2 or only had 1 and didn't want to go get another one.

I did look in the hole and didn't see it and it couldn't have gotten past the inside O-ring.

Sorry I was thinking the one at the tip was missing on a later 1-piece valve. My bad.
