For those that read my previous post about being offered a job in Indianapolis, this is my last day working for the Navy. My actual contract is over on 20 Jan but I start my seperation leave tomorrow.
After 12 years, it's a strange idea that I won't be doing this anymore. As I'm typing this, my desk is packed and al lI have left to do is, turn in my security badge and walk out the door.
I think I'll have a bourbon after lunch and play with my dogs.

I got out in 88, after 6 yrs. on subs. liked what I did, BS drove me out. Heard its worse now. But the civilian world is getting just as bad. The "safety " issue is getting to a point work is impeded to the max. Even my work clothes have to be flame retartant, And I work in a control room. $30.00 for a teashirt is ridiculus! Glad co. is providing it. Good luck. You'll be proud you did it. Join a Vets club if you can. They need us to survive and they do support us and our benefits. Plus the beer's cheap! Again good luck! Thanks Chris and Alex.
I'll probably stick it out in the reserves for the retirment (it depends on the unit htey want to assign me to).
Alex,
You are 100% right about the BS. It's much worse than my first enlistment back in 89.

Thanks Jeff, but the Navy pay wasn't that good. ![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Chrissy,
Va Beach isn't that bad but I don't think I'll miss it that much. I think I'll miss areas like Williamsburg being a short drive up 64 more than the area itself.

Congtats Shipmate:
I did the full boat (21+ yrs active, 8 and change Fleet Reserve.)). Spent 20+ yrs in and around Norfolk. Hated every minute I lived in Va Beach, but loved the Nav.
Some days I miss it (like when my step-son is showing his a$$ and I can't give him a 13 count choke hold) and some days I don't.
PC turned the Navy and militrary service as a whole, upside down. In fact, during my last week on active duty (I was attached to a limited duty billet (read: muster by phone)) I had to make a special trip to NavStaNorva so I could attend a 2 hour "seminar" about sexual harassment. What a crock.

F18rep,
Remind me.... DTG, BTDT?
Cliff,
I agree with you about PC. When did you retire? I bet you remember the $hit storm after Tailhook 91.
There are just too many changes for the negative.....Even more coming down the pipe...... Damn shame really.
I'm more than ready to get out of Va Beach!! Damn is it expensive here.

Congrat's Daniel,
Don't forget 911, since then port visits are strictly controlled which killed the "fun" balance of the "PC/BS" equation, not to mention deployment rotations. I'm at the 18 yr mark, completed all my sea time, and have paid ten years on my mortgage and lots of principal only payments. Something about tax free allowances paying my mortgage, allowing me the tax breaks, and heaping up tons of equity three blocks from the beach!!!!! Did I mention my retirement payments will cover my mortgage until I croak???
Technology has made onboard life MUCH more bearable. At the outbreak of the first gulf war, Desert Storm, I wrote letters by hand while waiting for the helo w/mail to arrive, grouped around AM radios to get the latest events, and relied on the ship's BETA movies for entertainment. Today's navy pay is MUCH, MUCH better.
USS First Boat was in Norfolk, it's true--west coast navy is WAY better than east coast!
Daniel-There's a lot of pride and nobility that comes with an honorable discharge!!!!
Michelle, Cliff-Outstanding!

ibkevin,
That is the way it should be (house, etc). You've listed a lot of the pros of being in right now.
If this job had not come along, I would have stayed without a problem.
I'm with you regarding tech making life much easier. Which tug were you on for Desert Storm? I was on the uss Roosevelt with VFA-15 and CVW-8. I remember waiting for the COD calls with weight. Remember hearing "COD inbound with 8 thousand pounds of mail!" Only to have be some parts and an Admiral with a letter in his pocket......
Keep the faith.
