Default Replacing Head Unit In Early N/A 944 Ideas or comments?

I have been admiring other 944 interiors and I was curious at to what other people thought. I kinda wanna stick w/stock but it is tough to get a CD/receiver that looks right in the dash. Everything today seams to be silver and very LOUD that is aftermarket. What have you done to your 944 for audio?

Yes I have the old school yellow gauges.

Right now I am considering a retro deck and an RF CD changer.

You can look around for a Nakamichi headunit. They are a very good brand of decks and as far from flashy as they get. The only downside is that they are somewhat expensive.

You can also opt to find the stock CD players from the newer Porsche's. They arent flashy at all.

I just got a Clarion DB345MP cd/mp3 player. For its $160 retail price, its pretty good, and it looks completely stock. I got several compliments on its appearance.

www.crutchfield.com We have a Kenwood head unit that has a black faceplate
and a CD changer hiding under the folded down rear seat back.

I like Blau. It keeps the whole German theme going...

Modern Blaupunkt units are garbage. Absolute junk. I have a San Fran (their most expensive model), it has been rebuilt now THREE times for some broken function or another. This experience isnt uncommon either.

The Nakamichi units are top of the line, VERY nice products.

My Blaupunkt Honolulu skips like a schoolgirl...total POS...German theme or not. Just bought a new Kenwood MP3 for the 83, mostly black face, no dancing lights or anything.

I have one of the first Sony MP3's in there. It's okay, but I'd recommend going with Clarion, kenwood or pioneer. You will have to hard wire it, you know that, right?

You can buy harness kits from Crutchfield.

nope - looked into that. You just have to wire it yourself

Strange, I have one in the garage. I guess they could have stopped but I know they did make them. Either way, stereo work is about as simple as wiring comes. If you cannot wire a stereo you should never touch a wire.

If your going to go with Blaupunkt, then try Midwest Electronics USA. They carry older models of Blau's at very reasonable prices. I purchased my Nevada (?) CD haed unit there for something like $125.00.

Edit - I checked their website - here's a CD unit for $109.95. The Indianapolis CD34 II. It's not a flashy design, so it may suit your purposes:

Midwest is about 20 mins from my office. They are right next to another place I go frequently. They are THE rebuilder for Blau units in the US.
