Default Hatch Shocks Replacement

Recently, my hatch has started to drop down about an inch after I open it, so I assume the shocks are starting to go. I have read posts that there can be problems if they are replaced, such as the glass separating, hatch not closing letting in fuel smells, etc.

Is there any way to "tighten" my existing hatch shocks, since they aren't that bad yet? Should I be overly concerned about problems associated with replacing them? Can I just replace one to keep the hatch open, or will that twist the hatch frame?
