That is what mine did right before it shorted. It was still connected to the pump.

It is my understanding that this power steering switch released the air conditioning clutch at high power steering pump pressures so that the load on the engine would not be too great and cause it to stall. I would say yes to your question as long as your ac was on when this happened. It is an easy check, look at your ps pump and it should have two spade lugs without connections. Then look at your wiring harness nearby and make sure the wires are tie wrapped up good.

Jon,
There's not much to look at under my hood, only thing left is the radiator, A/C compressor and PS pump. I'll check it out during my reinstall.

If there is a recall, and you own a 944S, don't try to do the fix yourself. Take it back to Porsche, and let them do the work. That's why they call it a "recall". And from my understanding, even if the recall is 15 years old, they will still do the work gratis. And it would probably mean that if something went wrong after that, you actually would have a legal claim aginst Porsche.

As for the legal opinion above -- sorry, I think it would be pushing it uphill if the manufacturer had issued a safety recall, was willing to honour it, but the owner(s) had simply not bothered to take the maunfacturer up on it.
