Default Calling New York area Rennlisters

I am going to be picking up a 1987 951 in the new york area on december 28th (hopefully). The catch is it needs the belts done. I plan to do the work myself, and will bring the parts, but I just have nowhere to work on it.

Up here in Calgary, there are a few places, were you can take a car, rent a bay, and do all your own work. They're usually pretty cheap (~$10/hour). Is there anywhere like this in New York? I asked the seller, and he told me no way.

If not, is somebody out there super-friendly, and wants to lend out their garage for a couple hours?

From what the current owner tells me, the belts are due for a change right now, and I have a 3000 mile trip home to make in this car, so I don't want to chance it on these belts.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sure thing.
I'm about 90% sure this car will need the belts done. He didn't give me the exact time the belts were done, but he said they were slightly overdue, so I'm not worried about driving it somewhere to change the belts, but I am worried about driving it 3000 miles before changing them.

Great that you guys are being so helpful!

I'm off that week, so if you need moral support or someone to hand you a beer, let me know.

I am about 25 miles from NYC, about 6 miles from JFK airport. If you have the tools you can use my garage. I would offer you a place to sleep but my parents have been staying with us since the ol man got a triple last month.

although if I ask around I may be able to get you a bed for a night or two.

Where in NY city is the car?

I have 2 driveways, but no garage. My mechanic used to work out of a rented place (like you were referring to), I'll check with him on details, in case nothinig else works out for you.

I'm flying into LGA, and the car is located on Staten Island.

I'm working on organizing everything still, but as soon as I pick the car up, I'm doing front engine seals, rollers and belts. I'm going to leave the waterpump for now, since I really don't want to touch the cooling system yet. I usually change the water pump every second belt change anyways.

If you don't mind, drop me a PM when you know when and where you'll be working. I don't have a garage I can offer, but I'm happy to lend a had and I'd love to watch a belt job being done. I also have a pretty sorry collection of tools, but I doubt anything that will be of any help.

Good news, Zero10 is on his way as of ~5 hrs ago.

Changed timing belts, fixed some vac/boost leaks, reconnected the WG, changed oil (much needed)...

AWWW, that literalyy brings a tear to my eye!!! Good work Adrial!!!

Let's hope he makes it home in one piece as they have had some bad conditions between NY and Calgary the past few weeks. I hope the P-Car doesn't mind cold weather starts

Michael
