Thumbs up Wow, I need to get into accidents more often!

So, some of you may remember a few months ago some slickster in an SUV backed up into me while we were stopped at a red light (yeah, I don't know either). Anyway, I just got the car back from the body shop, they had it for all of three workdays. The guy hit my car in the fender, really the side of the car, and nothing else was damaged. However they needed to blend onto the bumper, so I had them remove it and get the 100k miles worth of stone chips out. That was on my dollar. The day after I dropped it off they called up and said that if I'd like they could also do the header panel for around 80 more dollars, so I said fine since there were a bunch of stone chips in it also. Well, when I picked the car up I found out that they fixed all the little dents in the headlight doors, and a bunch of dents in the hood also. It turns out the owner's father, who used to own the business but has since retired, came down looking for something to do and ended up working on my car. Apparently he couldn't bear to paint the car with all the dents in it so he fixed them for free. On top of all the free repairs, the workmanship looks to be excellent so far as well.

The shop by the way is Kerr's Autobody in Pittsburgh. People are very quick to point out when a business does wrong by them; good work should be recognized also. Thanks to Eric for recomending them

Elephant-sized-SUVs have been put on this Earth so we can all get our low sports car painted. Great luck you had there! If a dummy in an Explorer would only ding my nose, i could get all those chips out too...

Just wondering,

How did you get those chips there in the first place? I recon it's from not keeping enough distance?

Here in The Netherlands that gets you a $500 (max) ticket. How's that in America?

Regards,

Jean-Paul

In Virginia you get four points and probably a fine...It's a misdemeanor. I doubt it's $500, but four points for one violation is a lot. Depending on if you get any more violations within the year (I think) where the points are on your license, you could stand to lose it for a few months. All that being said...I've personally NEVER heard of someone getting a ticket for this, and people on the Beltway drive less than 2 car lengths at 70 mph ++ ALL the time.

Sucks, here in the south we call that draft'n.
All kidding aside, most of my front chips came from a wild ride I had at Texas World Speedway with a Porsche Cup driver behind the wheel of my 951. The track had just been resurfaced and it wasn't holding up. The pavement was breaking up bad and sticking to everything. We finally had to cancel some of the run groups and reroute the track back to it's original configuration to finish the day. But that ride - man oh man that kid could drive. He was all over the bumper of MUCH faster race preped 911's and he could easily have taken them at any corner - he was that good. A very obvious example of the driver being more important than the car.

They were included free when I bought the car!

Actually, I can't imagine too many cars that don't have these chips after 100k miles, tailgating certainly would make them worse, but stuff flies up from the back of trucks all the time, etc. I always stay at least three seconds behind the car in front of me, but I have no idea how the last owner drove.

In this part of Texas our dirt is almost all rock. Stone chips are a fact of life even if you keep a safe distance.

If they needed to blend that should have been covered by the other guy's insurance. It was for an accident I had last year when a guy drove into me while I was parked.
