Default Painting Muffler

Since I don't have a rear valance on my 1984 944 na and you can see my rusty muffler, I am thinking of painting the muffler and exhaust up to the aluminum tip. Has anyone done this, and have any suggestions on prep, color, type of paint, etc.? I am thinking I can just clean all the rust off and paint it with high temp primer and flat black BBQ paint. Or will that look crappy?

Never done this myself, but based on other projects, I'll go with the predictions that it will look good, at first, and later look extra crappy as it rusts through and peels. You'll never get it clean or get the corrosion removed or neutralized. Suggestions:

Lower the car.
Get a valence.
Ignore it.

I painted the muffler and exhaust when I had it off for the clutch job. I used a high temperature, ceramic black paint. It looked good with the tip polished.

My customers and friends have had good luck with "POR 20". It's a high temp aluminum colored manifold paint. I also have people use it on the centers of their rotors. For more info http://theruststop.com/catalog/produ...f03f4e6f52bf3f. If you have any questions feel free to email me.

Sorry Matt, I could tell him my experience with it and say go to POR15 directly, but he wouldn't get personal advice from them, just a sales pitch. They also know more about chemicals, paints and labratory applications of their products. I use it on my custom Jeep parts and plan on using it on my recently purchased 944; real world experience.

While the delivery of the recommendation may not have been of the best timing on Bluesky's part Matt O, the product he speaks of POR15 has been recommended to me on numerous occasions, most recently when battery acid ate part of the trunk of my "Team girlie carz" Miata. Good stuff that POR15, but you need to do the homework on thier website to see if what they have will match the high heat applicaltion. Their rust neutalizer system is a no brainer though. http://www.por15.com/
Safe wrenching....and YMMV.

I called POR, and they recommended POR-15 on the muffler and exhaust, not POR-20. They said that POR-15 was more than sufficient with a 600 degree temperature rating, would work better to cover the rust, and that I would have "adhesion problems" using POR-20 on the muffler as it would not create the high heat required to get POR-20 to cure properly.

I've used grill paint on a ranger my brother had. The paint worked fine, but burned off of the cat. It's cheap paint to get and holds up to the temps just fine. I have SS on the porsche, so I'm not even touching that.
