Agreed. one winter 2 years ago, when I still had the old battery (which was still good at the time) alternator and starter, I left 15w50 in the car cuz I wasn't ready to change it. Well, it got down to 10 degrees, and I went to start the car...It started, but I've never heard the starter actually struggle to turn the engine....it cranked over like, 3 times in a second, then a little faster and finally she fired up, but ran like sh*t until the engine warmed up...I promptley went home the next day and put in some 0W40, that night, 10 degrees again, and she fired right up.

DO NOT IDLE TO WARMUP. Start the car and get going.
Why not?.....
If I don't let mine warm up, I can't shift at all, because the transmission is simply too cold.
Not to mention, the car will barely drive until the engine hits at least 30 or 40 degrees celcius.
I usually let it warm up until it melts all of the frost on my windshield, scrape the other windows, get in, and take it easy for 10 or 20 minutes until things loosen up a bit.

It was -25C this morning, I had it plugged in (oil pan heater, lower rad hose heater), and I still gave it almost 10 minutes to warm up, and I could barely drive it.

A battery heater jacket should help with cold-start. Keeps the batter up to warmer temperatures.

Yep, I'm adding a circulating heater this winter, and tossing the lower rad hose heater, too bad we have the thermostat on the lower rad hose =(
I'm also putting in a battery heater and acid mat.
As well as bodging an oil pan heater to make a transmission heater, lol.
About 1400W of heaters on my car when I'm done, this had better warm it up when it's -50C.
