my wheel refinish is done!
Here ya go...wheel refinish is done!. Stripped wheel, polished lips, and repainted the center. About 6 hours per wheel.... Im still thinking about the center caps though.
Anyone have a machine shop That could make me a solid 2 inch diameter ring that is 3 mm wide?

Wow those look super. I wish my lips were that good. While you're at it, point those crests toward the valve stems.

Wow, 24 hours total!! Mine only took 10 hours. Your wheels do look awfully nice though.
I used the blue painters tape to mask the lip off. Juts use 2 inch long pieces and take your time. A careful masking job will show.
Hardest part is without doubt sanding the centers.

Wow, very nice. Congratulations on a beautiful job! Do you have any "before" pictures posted?
What type of paint did you use?
Thanks!

Thanks...Yours look good also Serge.
It took me so long because I stripped, then hit the bad spots with a dremel, then wetsanded the lips as bpp944 suggested. I started with 600 grit, then 1000, then 1500, then 2000. Then hit it with mothers about 4 times.
I used that dupont Wheel finish..gloss black. (i think its dupont, but ill look and see if i can find the empty cans.)
Here is the proceedure i used:
The wheels are in great shape..but the lips were clearcoated and yellowing and beginning to pit.
I used " Jassco Speedomatic Semi-past Stripper Gel" You can get it at Lowes. I highly recommend it. Its safe for metal/aluminum. Has NO fumes and brushes on with out a mess. Be carefull with this stuff...it will burn your skin immediatly as i found out when splashed it on my arm. This crap hurts like hell...anyhow...
First I washed the wheels with dish soap and water.
This is what it looked like before I started
Then after drying them. I used painters masking tape to tape off the center of the wheel, Since the centers are fine. After taping it off, I used a box cutter to lightly score the tape around the outer edge of the lip. Be carfull NOT to cut to deep, or youll score the rim.
After taping it off and cutting the edges. I used an old tooth brush to apply the stripper liberally Dont be shy with it. WEAR eye protection and long sleeves and rubber gloves.
Let that sit for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then come back with a plastic putty knife and scrape the lifted clearcoat off (youll see it bubble). Then apply more stripper with the tooth brush and repeat.
Next wash the wheel with dish soap and the rest will come off. Remove the tape and Youll see what you missed, so you can go back and touch up with a cuetip to make sure you get all the clear. After that...wash the wheel again. Let dry. Your all done. Now do the other 3 wheels.
Finished wheel Much better...
Next step is to wet sand with 600 grit up to 2000 grit paper and then apply mothers polish 4 times per wheel.
After the sanding and polishing....I taped off the rim, with small peices of painters tape. Then sanded the centers, and sprayed them. 6 light coats per wheel.(see pics in first thread for finished result)
Then after drying for 12 hours, I pust them in front of a space heater for a few hours.
Thats it....

Nice job!
How long does the mother's polish last?
If you're driving the car in an environment with road salt, sand, etc. would it be better to re-clearcoat the outside edge of the wheel? Does anyone have experience with this?
The solution I was told is that you would just repolish the wheels again if the finish became messed up. The solution was by a shop that did wheel polishing, so I really didn't trust their advice, and it was in Southern California, which has considerably milder weather than other places.

I used the duplicolor wheel paint...i think that is what he was referring to. I used Blue magic polishing compound on my wheel and it has lasted for over a month now without any reduction in luster.

well.....I made a terrible rookie mistake...I assumed that because I had an 86 961 that the 23 offset from the early cars would work. Guess what...it doesnt withour a spacer for this wheel. It wont clear the Turbo brakes. Im not doing spacers...so anyone with an 86 na or below...so they are now for sale. I was really just going to use them while I refinished my phones anyhow.

Looks great!
Another thing you could try is some modelling liquid mask from a hobby shop. It brushes on and is easily removed. I used that when I painted my wheels over the summer.
BB.
