Default tailights

Happy Thanksgiving

You know what would be cool in my opinion...

I've seen all the special colors made for the tailights, but I would like to have the color be more "Candy Apple Red" to match the color that they have on the newer Porsche and BMW cars. In comparison the current/old color of the tailights is a more "Dark Red" I believe this alone would make the cars look a lot newer while retaining the classic look. You could also do this for the rear side markers.

Can that guy who did all the special colors match that color?

Go to the model car section of Walmart and purchase a can of Testors candy apple red transparent paint (less than $5). You can put of a couple coats of the paint on the taillights, do a search for "testors" and you'll find what you need.

Cyrus, I think 944J is looking to make the taillights a lighter shade, painting them will omly darken them. You would most certainly need to have remolded lenses to make this work; either in the tint you desire or in clear and paint to suit.

Can you go from a heavier opacity (stock) to a lighter opacit (what I am talking about?)

It seems you would have to start with clear and then go up to the light red color to match a modern day porsche tail light.

there was a guy doing this for lots of people, but he just went darker and all red and some other variations. I didn't see the color that I see on the new 911's.

The color I am talking about is also closer to the all red color of the 968 lights.

Leadfoot,

I'm sure everyone has asked you a thousand times, but for the 1001th time where (or how) did you get your clear tail lenses for your 944.

Thanks!

And I believe he made them (I think?). Something about removing the color from the inside of the plastic, as if it was a "tint" type of coating. Hope that helps. DAmian?

The tail lights get darker with age. I bought a new set and they look brand new now.

I think you may have a point for a lighter colored car, but on mine, I like the dark red as you can see in my avitar.

FWIW, I bought cans from Hobbyline.com of Testors Spray Transparent Candy Apple Red plus casn of Clear Gloss Finish Spray. Cost was ~$15 for the paint, plus shipping. I washed the taillights, wet sanded lightly with 400 grit sandpaper, dried them, wiped them down with some wax remover and masked them. Sprayed one LIGHT coat of the color, followed at 15-20 minute intervals with three light coats of the clear. They look like new and aren't dark at all. The new color does, however, show up every spider-web-type crack in the lenses. Still, better than the old faded pink look.
