Sorry to hear that!

Just last week someone stole my checking account number, and spent $220 at Longs Drugs with a fake check. These people will get what they deserve in the end, don't worry.

Dal, depending on how much of your personal info these thieves have collected, you probably should contact at least one of the three credit reporting agencies to put a fraud alert on your records immediately. (The other two agencies are automatically notified by the first, apparently.) This will help you if these thieves start trying to get credit in your name to buy misc items.

Note to self...never connect my lifesavings to any on-line service. I have several accounts, I only use my chequing account for on-line transactions.

Too bad it's a small bank, a larger one would probnably be more sophisticated in its investigative techniques. Still, I can't believe there's no way for them to trace where the money went.

What do the police say? Are they helping?

They forged a cheque and then forged your name? There's no way you're liable for that. Tell your bank to reverse charges.

The bank is closed on weekends and it was dropped in the banks hands Friday. They have not even gotten started looking into it. Not sure of anything right now.

Dal: I agree with Flight_951 that you need to start contacting all your crediters (VISA, etc.) and tell them to hold on all payments unless authorized by you--no need for them to go on a spending spree with your stolen ID. Next, you need to contact your local authorities--even if they can't do anything immediately, you need to file this identity theft. Other Rennlisters have also mentioned the bank--they need to help you trace this. File your police report and get them involved with the bank. You also have the power to write to your local District Attourney, as well as your local state and federal representatives to ask for help--it's in your right as a citizen to ask for these resources. Call your credit card companies and also ask them how they can trace ID theft--chances are, that rat bastard will make charges again... but once your crediters are alerted, they can be on the lookout for additional suspicious activity.

Dude, it really sucks, but hang in there. You still have power to take action!

If you got an email, this is what you should be able to do, but it may be necessary to get a lawyer.

If you have the email you clicked on to send the information, go to a lawyer or someone who is specialized in computer forensics, i'm sure a decent lawyer would knwo where to find one.

With what is found in the email, you should be able to at least go to the earliest server it went through, before the trace gets lost. Then they should be able to go to that provider, and get their arp , dhcp, or radius logs from the ISP the email was sent from, and you should be able to track that down to the IP it came from at that time on that day. Yes, IP addresses change everytime you sign off and online, and his IP address may be someone elses now, but if you have that time, the ISP should have logs that have the IP address along with the MAC address at that time. The mac address is not changeable, it is a physical address of the computer. From there the ISP should have the person's name matched with the hex mac address.

This is just a main way a forensic specialist would go about it, and it should be possible. I'm sure the people doing this scam aren't idiots, and this is probably fakeable, but it's worth a try to go to a lawyer and have them look into it.

Check your personal/home insurance. Many forms of insurance can cover this kind of thing.
You've been robbed. That's what insurnace is for.

I hate F*c8in thieves especially when they prey on elderly. I believe they should be made to slave for the rest of their life paying back debts of all the victims of fraud. Sorry to hear it happened but I am sure there is a procedure to report something like this. When money transfers, there is always a trace. Lets hope someone who knows more can chime in.

Amazing, hard to believe a drug store would fall for that. Tell your bank to credit your account. Not your fault they're morons.

man , this came as a reminder for me. 2 days ago, i received a email from paypal saying we will lock your account if you dont update it, so i went there, used the link entered my pass, then they asked me about name address , credit card.......... then i realized it was scam, so i logged out, and came back again and it was gone. all they got was my password. but lateri changed every pass i have paypal, ebay bank accounts..........
iam very sorry to hear what happened , there are so many scammers out there. i suggest to all of you guys, to never use links provided in emails to check any account.
iam pretty sure your bank has fraud insurance and should refund your money.
hope everyone learn from this thread, and we wish you all the best
incredible!!!!!!
