Default Rear main seal?? Removal

Is there any good ideas for removing the rear main seal without damaging the crank or surrounding lip? I tried the screw driver pry method but I get concerned that I am going to nic the soft metal around the engine.

Appreciate the help!!

a small pick, like the probes for an ohm meter work well.

The seal is sooo tight it tends to bend the pick or requires more force then I can pull while laying on my back.

A flat blade will work fine. Aim towards the block, not the crank, then pry it out.

You need to pierce into the seal with the blade and tap with a hammer until it busts free, then pry to the outside of the seal. You have less of a chance of leakage if you midly scrape our gouge the block due to the design of the seal.

I guess I am a little slow tonight. How do you bust if free with a hammer? I have peeled back the outter lip but I can't seem to get behind or force the seal loss. It is in very tight? Appreciate the help!!!! I'll post a pic soon.

Tap the end of the screwdriver into the meat of the seal... outer edge is best. The tapping should eventually dislodge it or chew it up enough to get it out.

You must have ate it up a bit already. Can you get some needlenose pliers onto a chunk of it?

Have you tried a seal puller?

Perry:

I am able to get a set of needle nose pliers on the meat of the seal but it still won't budge.

Any suggestions at this point? Thanks!

do you have something like flat plastic that you could slip under the seal to break it loose from the crank? metal would probably damage the crank but if you had a softer material it might get you somewhere

if you try fezz's suggestion (and heat is usually a good idea), please DO NOT use a torch: use a heat gun. using a torch on a seal that holds back oil is probably not the brightest of ideas

Little afraid to warm anything up with all the oil around. Ya I put a piece of rubber around the crank and then tried to pry the seal out but it just bent the outter lip of the seal.

I think a seal puller might be my next move.

As you can see there is red silicone on the main seal. I HATE THAT STUFF!! I know a gent named Alan that can tell you brutal stories about how bad that stuff is. The factory didn't use it....

As Andrew suggested, head to your parts store (PepBoys) and look by the register. There should be some little plastic scrapers that will help you get the silicone off and the at the black/brown main seal.

Start chunking away at it, that's about all you can do. If it's on there really good, you can get some silicone solvents, but make sure it's cool for use on aluminum and aluminum silicate blocks. Use exactly as directed, you don't want that stuff dissolving your engine.

disintegrating your crank/block is one way to get the seal off, but there may be side effects
