Default PS Reservoir Drip

Every year when it gets cold, my 944 develops a drip around the power steering reservoir (both hoses). Last night I removed everything to try to fix them. They were pretty hard and squished where the clamps have held them for 18 years, so I decided to snip off the hardened ends and reclamp them.

This worked great on the smaller diameter hose, but the bigger one was really difficult to get seated on the reservoir. I got it about halfway on, and then noticed a cut about an inch down on the hose which was either the source of this leak, or perhaps I cracked it trying to twist it on.

So here are my questions:

Is the hose with the bigger diameter flared at the end from the factory? This would explain why I'm having so much trouble attaching it.

If I decide to make the old hose work, I will lose about 2" of it...do you think that would be OK?

If I decide to go with a new hose, I think the bigger diameter one goes to the pump and the smaller one is the return from the rack. Is that right?

What kind of connection does that hose have to the pump?

Thanks for listening!

Eric

If it's original, it's time to replace it anyways. It's not the cheapest hose, but it'd be a lot less trouble and solve your leak for sure. If you have the original resovoir, you may want to check that for leaks too.

The factory hose is flared at the end and you do need to replace it. If it's routed around the front of the waterpump it's the old style hose. When you get the new one get a new style fitting for the pump and a crushring for the same fitting. The new hose will be tight so you will want to lube it with something like alittle dish soap.

Performance Products' catalog has a great diagram of the power steering system on the late cars, but I tossed my catalog. %$&#!!

If anyone would want to scan that in or post a similar illustration from PET I'd be eternally grateful. (I believe that's OK under copyright stuff because you're just showing me a specific picture from the work to illustrate a point.) I really want to make sure I order the correct expensive hose! Thanks,

Eric

The smaller line is the return line. Part # 944.347.459.03

The larger line's part # is 944.937.445.02

Let me know if you need any other #'s.

Alrighty, I ordered the new line from the reservoir to the pump and the new fitting and all. 2 questions:

It looks like it connects at the top of the pump. Will that be accessible with the pump in place or will I have to remove it? How tricky is that?

Also, it evidently routes down to the pump differently. Is that self-explanatory or can someone draw me a pic? Thanks,

Eric
