Geoff: yeah, that's my fear... really don't want to inflict any damage to the car with the ski rack.

Hacker: how has your experience been with your OEM rack? Does it cause any damage to the seals or paint?

Chase,

Check out my avatar. That is a photo of the same "Sherpa" rack which Joe is selling. It is pretty easy to install/remove. The ahrdest part is reaching up under the bumper to mount the lower bracket--you can even leave that bracket on year-round if so inclined. the only downside to the rack is needing to take the skis off whnever opening the hatch.

Eric: took me a while to realize I was looking at the wrong photo... was too distracted by the girls (couldn't find a Sherpa in that group, no matter how hard I looked!)

Thanks for the advice on the bracket--I like the fact that I can leave it on for the winter! Any problems with your rack? Scrapes? Dents? problems with seals?

Thanks... Chase

Chase,
I had it on my car for about 2 months just for the hell of it - did no damage. I have not been able to find any attachments for it so it's actually a bit worthless right now. I've had it for about 5 years. Local Porsche dealer had it in stock, I figured why not buy it. The two screws between the quarter window and the hatch is where the rear bar bolts to.

Hacker: thanks for the input. When you mention attachments, did you mean for the skiis themselves or for other sporting gear (like Mountain bikes, snowboards, etc.)?

Like i said, teh only damage it inflicts is to the door seals, and it's not to the point where they will stop doing their job, it just gives them a little cut from front to back about halfway down the seal. You can't tell unless the rack is on that there is damage to the seal,

Chase--the bottom bracket needs slid behind the rear bumper and bolts over the bumper shock mount. This bracket angles up and over the rear bumper(it covers only the "P" of the "Porsche" decal.) and sticks up about 2" or so. There are 2 nuts welded to this bracket the large triangular piece then bolts to these 2 nuts, and the ski carrier portion bolts to the tall trianlge piece. The upper ski mount portion screws to the car uner the upper hatch--open your hatch and it uses the 2 screw mounting points along the side. When I had it mounted, there were no ill effects to the seal, although I did put a tiny scratch on the "P" decal when I bolted the trianlge to the bracket. That bumper bracket is a PIA to installa nd remove, so you can just unblot everyhting else, and leave the bracket mounted all winter. Just watch where the welded nuts meet against the decal/area below the tailights.

Eric: Thanks for the heads up. Any problems withrRust where the upper portion mounts to the hatch? The roads up here are always salted... a bit worried about corrosion. (and do you have a larger pic of those Argentinan babes? ;-) )

Thanks... Chase

Hacker-Pschorrr,

I have the OEM rack, and I bought my bike attachment this year from 928 Specialists:

http://www.928gt.com/928Racks.htm

Interestingly, all the bike, ski, canoe and cargo attaachments for the 944 OEM bike rack uses 928 part numbers. You can find the diagrams in the PET.

Here's another pic of the OEM rack installed on a 944 (this is not my car):

Chase, forget the ski rack. Buy some track wheels/tires and bring that water pumper to Lime Rock. You will not regret it.

ACG: thanks for the pics. Any issues with installation or break down after the season? Rust or damage to car at all? Thanks... Chase

K964: yeah, I need those wheels! But I am probably not on Santa's good list this year. Will try to get down to Lime Rock once I figure out what the suspension problem is in front... ugh! (I feel my wallet getting lighter already...)

ACG: a little OT, but what are you doing in Singapore? I was posted there for a while...

No issues with installation. You may get some crud and scuff marks in the areas marked by the arrows in the pic. This is typical for any type of roof rack. A simple polish and wax buff should easily clear the marks away. The greatest problem is making sure you do not run the car into the garage with the bike or skis still attached to the car. Thank god this has only happened to my wife's Jetta

Question: What am I doing in Singapore???

I am on a 2 to 3 year Regional Manager assignment for my company, Freightliner (North America truck manufacturer for DaimlerChrysler). Just started about 3 months ago. Both 944s are in storage. The storage facility will run the engine and rotate the tires once a month. This means that I am still at least 2 years away from being reunited with my babies

Chase72, what were you doing in Singapore? It's a nice little tropical place to live for a couple of years!
