Default Does worn transmission mount give noisey rear end?

I have a '88 944 NA and have read a few posts in the archives that says if the trans mount is worn it can result in a noisy rear end. Has anyone had this problem? It also sounds like the replacement is fairly easy? I'd appreciate feed back on that too because it does not look easy. I ask because while underneath mine investigating why my exhaust system is rattling I noticed that it was hung off of the tranny and torque tube and the whole while also moving the axils in and out what seemed like several inches. This amount of play just doesn't seem normal. I'd sure appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Are you saying you can move the axles at inner CV's to trans connection (axle flange)in and out about an inch? I hope i read your question wrong. All the transaxles I've worked on had less than 1/8" play at this axle flange connection. If you mean you can swing the whole transaxle back and forth several inches I would say your mount is probably shot.
