I'll second the wheel bearings. Raise the rear end and check each wheel for lateral play. Any wiggle would indicate worn bearings. If you replace them, be sure to change out the spacers as well, or you'll be doing them again before long. BTDT.

Here's a list of parts (per wheel) FYI. Note that they are all VW part numbers, although the spacers are probably only available through your local Porsche dealer.

Inner wheel bearing: 113.501.283
Outer wheel bearing: 113.501.277.A
Wheel seals (2 per hub): 113.501.315.H
Inner spacer: 113.501.305
Outer spacer: 113.501.303
O-ring seal: 113.501.291.B

CV joints? Did you keep the old ones?

gave the old ones back (core charge). they were only $65 each for complete axles at the local autoparts store. once again, a vw part. well, 130 well spent anyway. how hard are wheel bearings to replace?

Hey, what VW do they fit?!
I knew the joints were the same on a T4 van, but they wanted $175 for full axles, and wouldn't sell just the joints.
I need to replace 2 cv joints, so I would rather just change all 4. If the entire axles fit, that's much better.

yes, call a local autoparts store. they'll tell you the 944 cv axel assemblies are used in many vw applications. for $65 per assembly, it's well worth it!

Jeez, I went to 3 local stores. All 3 of them assured me that it is not possible that any of the cv axles would fit my car, despite the possibility that the joints themselves might fit.
I would much rather replace an entire axle than just the joints, it's much simpler.

wheel bearings are a pain in the ***.. especially wihtout the specific tool. Although, they may be easier for you, as you have two bearings, instead of one huge one. What are these spacers you say to replace? Are they on the late cars? I didn't notice anything else that would come off, when i had it off last time.

Not true Devon. Bearing are easy with the right equipment.
OTHERWISE: Make sure you heat the bearings prior to its new home. The spindles should be cold and the bearings s/b hot. Get a leather wound hammer to help.

Zero10, I've replaced the joints themselves with Löbro CVs for a VW Vanagon with good results. As for the complete axles, I couldn't tell you.

I got the CVs from an Internet supplier for not much money - around $126 for all 4, plus the triple square bolts. The replacement isn't difficult, just messy. Have plenty of degreaser on hand, a good pair of rubber gloves and the right tools, and you can overhaul both axles in an evening. I'm sure there are lots of detailed posts in the archives. I know I wrote a few.

If I have to unbolt those cheeseheads (tirple squares) one more time in the next month or so, I'm going to flip out.

For the record... My 5 dollar triple square wrench has held up through a tranny replacement, removal of the cv's again, and removal of one cv for wheel beaing on driver rear. Still going strong. Should probably replace the bolts again next time though.

If you torqued them down correctly to 41 Nm, you shouldn't have to.
