Default Indulge me...

Indulge me for a minute here as I'm thinking outloud.

Last December, I bought my 951. As of now it still has a mere 54k miles on it. One of my long term Porsche ideas is to have a car that is well sorted for the track but still street legal and driveable.

Now, I realize that it takes significantly more time and money to turn a street car into the above, meaning it's easier to buy one already sorted out. Secondly, to turn my car into a track mobile seems to not really be a great idea. It has barely any miles, an awesome interior, sport seats, Fuchs, etc. Third, it's a 1986 turbo...it's not going to be comfortable at an autocross in stock form.

So am I crazy to consider selling my car in order to buy a track & street normally aspirated 944-series car? I'd want it for driver ed events, autocrosses, and carving corners on hour long trips to get milk in the real world.

Keep that car!! It's way too nice to modify like that.

Find a cheap 83 or 84 944 that you can gut.
The early cars can make a good track car.

EDIT-Ha, I knew UD would swoop in here.
Now where is that vulture icon?

haha, don't sell it trade it to me for my Na!
Seriously, the question is: what is your budget, you could get a nice 924s and gut that to make a great track car, but are you planning on having a car with a strong engine or putting a motor in it? It can be done pretty cheaply, especially the Na's but what is your budget?

Do you want a track car or an autocross car? Two different things.

If you want an autocross car just go buy an NA or s2 and ditch the turbo. If you want a track car the 86 951 is perfect. I don't want to hear anything about low mileage, perfect interior, etc. There have been a number of people that take perfect street cars and turn them into perfect track cars. I know of a few that have been racing 951s since they were new. If it makes you feel any better, just sell off all the good pieces to someone who has a garage queen and feel a sense of doing your part for the community.

Yes, in the end it would be cheaper to just buy a track car but what's the fun in that? Also, you can continually improve the car as you improve as a driver. If you don't have much experience and buy a 400hp 951 with 800lbs/in. springs, I promise you will be sorry. Good Luck.

Kurt- I'll point you into the direction of a 924S for an autocrosser..inexpensive to buy- fater than a NA, and .. HEY WAIT!! That's my shpeel!

Yours is WAAAY to nice to gut and track. Resurrect a wayward 944.

Yeah, I say keep the turbo, and find a beat up 924s or na to gut and abuse.

Haha, you serious? You'd want another 951 for your stable?

Now keep in mind this is just another crazy idea for me...

That being said, an S2, 924S, or 85.5+ 944 (in that order) would be what I had in mind...leaning towards the S2.

Oh yes, I'm well aware of my limitations in this department, haha. As for the track worthiness of this car, yes it is perfect. I just can't decide if I like it enough to keep it over an S2 track/street combo car. Additionally, I'm not placing too much value in the gradual process of getting it up to a decent track setup...more along the lines of buying it ready and willing.

Of course, probably none of this will happen until next spring. If I could do the two things quickly, wam-bam, sell mine, buy another, I would consider it. But with the long processes that these things are...I'm hesitant to sell my car outright and not have a p-car indefinitely. Just some ramblin' thoughts

Additionally:

Budget? Cheaper to maintain than a 951, hence S2, 942S, or 85.5+ 944.
Level of track-orientation for this idea? Not overly serious, I'm not club racing or anything. Suspension obviously, brakes, maybe upgraded clutch

Id either keep the 951 I have or perhaps do the unthinkable and sell. It would be pretty cool though to have a pure twin of the 930 in every way. I get a stiffy for red on champagne with fuchs.
