Need Muffler, $772 OEM, Anybody Tried SFR on an S or S2?
Well my 944S sounds vrrooom, vroooom embarassing with a split muffler seam so I am looking at replacements. For some reason the S and S2 models have mufflers that are twice the price of Turbo and 944 mufflers.
I just looked at Speed Force Racing link to SFR (scroll down the page) and they have an S stainless steel cat back for $599. I am leaning towards that model but it comes in 2.5 or 3.0" diameter.
I have heard conflicting ideas about back pressure. It makes sense to increae flow to let the engine breath better but somewhere in my memory there is an idea that you would loose torque without back pressure.
My engine is stock and will stay that way.
Have you tried this system on your car?
Does the diameter make any difference?

I'm also wanting to know about the SFR 2.5 for the S2. I want to put one on mine. They also have some headers for the S2, would this help in addition to the Weltmeister chip I'm buying? What kind of intake would make this a complete package for a few additional ponies? Would the headers hurt or help?

Just use the 2.5", Tims stuff is top quality. I have the 3" and I have seen most of his products. There are some sound bites from Blue S2 (IIRC) with his 3" on his S2.

I have heard an S2 with the sfr exhaust on it, it belongs to aribop here on the list. His sounds good.
I installed a magnaflow on mine and it sounds good, but I have access to a welder and all.

Here's Blue S2's post from the sfr group buy post a few weeks back. If you want in on the group buy, just call sfr now and it's $599 for the cat-back with shipping and everything. I got mine in the mail!
Recommendation: Do NOT go with a 3" on an N/A - you will be losing power. If you have questions, call Tim at SFR or post questions on the turbo forum's group buy thread.
Ok everyone, I wish i could get better quality but a moving car just doesnt support my normal equipment. Dont even ask how i recorded this. Any strange sounds are probably me hitting the mic stand. (i said dont ask) There is also some wind noise. (im dumb and forgot a wind screen) This is what the SFR 2.5" catback sounds like on a 944 S2 from inside the car with only the passenger window down, assuming you are a passenger. 2 runs, edited for a stop, etc... First run is short and you can hear me decelerate, second run starts from 1500rpm in second gear and ...ahem...peaks at 5800rpm or so in 3rd with a quick switch to fourth. Thats about as good as i can do in my current location.

Hey, i have added more sound clips to my signature. Theres even one from inside the car. DONT GET THE 3" for an S2 !!!! Its gonna be rediculous. Especially if you dont have a cat or you run a straight pipe. Stick with the 2.5" . its more than enough.
EDIT: Oops! You added my most recent post! I should have read it! I thought you posted my review from the last group buy. Oh well! Thanks anyways! So there are no NEW clips in my signature. Just the 3 that you see. Again, if anyone is local, i am more than willing to give test drives!

Jon, this probably won't help you much with your replacement decision, but Porsche apparently did something pretty high class with the original mufflers. I don't know what all the facts are but when I was replacing my turbo muffler tip the shop tried to saw off the old one by cutting on the tube extension coming out of the muffler. The guy had a brand new sawsall blade and the tube rounded off all the teeth on the blade like it was made out of tool steel. He barely put a scratch in the tube and the blade was toast.

The 3" has shown no loss of lowend (below 3999) power. The midrange(4000-6499) is well improved but the topend(over 6500rpm) is just wonderful now over stock exhaust. The sound isnt as loud as the SFR guys say and to me that was a big disapointed. Soon I hope to fix that problem and hopefully see another 5+ whp.
I however would suggest a 2.5" if you plan on running it on a near stock engine . If you are going the boosted route/N20/Very High RPM built engine a 3" might be good to have along with some mid-pipes.

I think you could get a custom cat-back or stainless replacement for a lot less at a good local muffler shop, I'd check around first. An experienced muffler guy can custom bend tubing in almost no time.

So can you get a Borla muffler with this SRF cat back 2.5? I have heard numerous posts about how the Borla muffler has the deepest best sound. Anyone know where to get a Borla muffler for 944 S2?
