Default Failed Smog, GROSS POLLUTER RESULTS!!

I failed Smog a couple days ago, what causes these numbers:

TEST RPM %C02 %02 HC(PPM) CO(%) NO(PPM)
15MPH 2597 14.1 0.5 MAX: 116 MAX: 0.74 MAX: 791
TEST: 98 TEST: 0.84 TEST: 2701

25MPH 2438 14.1 0.5 MAX: 91 MAX: 0.62 MAX: 730
TEST: 103 TEST: 0.80 TEST: 2769

So I failed CO, and NO @ 15mph,
And HC, CO, AND, NO (All three ) @ 25mph

Why is my NO soooo high??
I am now designated a Gross Polluter, yay to me!!

Yup, I smogged it with the cat on. I bought it brand new last year.

High NO, low CO would be a definate lean (= vac leak most likely). However with too high CO, it could be something else as well.

Do you know if your O2 sensor is working? If not, you could try replacing it first - the DME uses the O2 readings to adjust mixture in closed loop mode (ie., when not driving full throttle)

Cyrus, put these in a format so the numbers line up, it is impossible to read them this way.

NO (PPM): 2701 (Max 791) <--FAIL

25mph:
RPM: 2438
%CO2: 14.1
%O2: 0.5
HC(PPM): 103 (Max 91) <--FAIL
CO%: 0.80 (Max 0.62) <--FAIL

Even if you replaced the cat last year, a bad O2 sensor could take it out with too rich of a mixture. You can check the O2 sensor with a multimeter. There have been numerous posts on the O2 sensor/testing/replacing.

In CA, I always did a pre-test just before the real test, to make sure the real test would never be characterized as a gross polluter (if there was a problem passing, I would leave after the pre-test).

You're f-cked, now that the car is a gross polluter, now it's characterized that way for life, right?

Danno posted in my other thread, and confirmed it was the cat.
I'm going to buy a bottle of "Guaranteed to Pass," run it, and install my testpipe back when I pass.

When I first smogged my 924s in 1998, I did a pre-test, then the actual test.

The a$$cl0wn shut the car off for 20 minutes between the pre-test (which I passed with flying colors) and actual test. He then turned the car on (it was a cold February day) and ran the test with 30 seconds of starting the car - and it almost failed.

Since then, the car was "profiled" and I was only allowed to take the car to a test-only station, even though it never actually failed in any test (1998, 1999, 2001, 2003). They send cars that are likely to fail (according to age of the car and prior emissions results) to a test-only station.

I had thought about mailing my pre-test results in to see if I could be pulled off the list, but I never got around to it.

I moved to Chicago for school - might try to make my way back to Socal in 3 years or so.

I had my poor boyfriend's car do that, and it was the catalytic converter AND O2 sensor!

You bought a BAD cat, man! I did go to a test only station, but I had made friends with the guy, and he did 3 pretests, and I had replaced the O2 sensor, first, brought emissions down, but not enough. I'd replace BOTH.

Then stick them both aside, and stick on your straight pipe, if you wish.

NOW if the cat has been just sitting there, and you've been running your straight pipe, you've possibly have a SERIOUS engine problem developing there, because I've heard of our engines doing pretty good anyway.

BTW - does anyone know if the '83 falls off the SMOG tests, next year?

Check the air flow meter voltage. If the PO screwed things up, the air flow meter adjustment screw setting should be checked.

You know what, i may totally be off here...but i swear ive heard something about keeping our cars in 1 gear up to the 25mph or sometihng like that. Something that technicians shifting our cars too early was changing results due to the engine lugging or something... Anyone else know anything? I swear i read it on the boards somewhere...
