It seems to do it intermitently. I will start the car to let it warm up as it's already below zero here by a good 10 degrees. I'll drive and upon accleration the sunroof will open and will continue to try to open! This is a problem b/c it doesn't stop unless I'm at a dead stop and the sound! Unfortunately it's on the same circuit as the heater and I need the heater! The switch is in the neutral position, it still "clicks" and it will even do it with the switch removed! Even before I start moving and it still does this, I've tried another switch too and still no dice. I removed the switch and it still happens! Is there a seperate relay for the sunroof? Is there a way to unplug the motor as I won't be needing it for the next 7 months or so.
And as an aside it seems my heater only works on either off or high position and not any other positions, what would cause this?

My 87 had this problem when I bought it. It would just open all by itself when I started to drive the car. The dealer told me the microswithes were out of adjustment and a sunroof gear was stripped. Since I didn't feel like paying them $350 to repair it they just pulled the sunroof relay. I'm not sure if any of this applies to your 84. If you do pull the relay make sure you don't lose it cause they cost a small fortune!

The arms just aren't gripping onto the back of the sunroof where they should. They may need adjusted to move up more/less. I don't know too much about that part since I converted to the manual latches now...

correct me if i'm wrong but it's not actually up front but in the back in the trunk area? I hear a clicking in the back quite often when this happens, forgot to mention that.. it only clicks when I have the power to the circuit off

It's on the driver's side behind the carpet. The motor is there and the adjustments are bolts/screws on that I believe - do a search and make sure you're looking at the early sunroof adjustment.

Your switches are out of alignment. It thinks you just put the sunroof back into the car and its trying to close it. If thats true and you have power locks, then sit inside the car and have someone lock the doors from the outside, you should hear the sunroof motor start and try to "latch" the sunroof.

I had the same problem, but I fixed it by disconnecting 1 wire.
Go to the sunroof motor in the hatch, look for a green/white wire, cut it.
The sunroof will still be operational, and it won't go up by itself anymore whenever you're driving/moving the car.
Good luck.
