Default Pot Hole:Tire damage

Buddy hit a pot hole hard in my car. Inspected the damage and no visible marks or damage to wheels/rims, but there was a bubble the size of a quarter and protruding out about 1/2" on the sidewall of his front tire. The tires are fairly used (aprox 25% left), so good time to replace? Is this a safety issue?

I wouldn't trust a tire with a bubble, I'd replace it if I was you. Safety first

Yup - you probably broke a belt inside the tire.

It will blow out at the least opportune time- replace it as soon as you can afford to..

I had a tire that had a "rub mark" on the inside of the tire, because I hit something and bent the rim. So the tire rubbed the inside of the rim, on a low profile tire.

In that case, I was advised to change the tire without any evidence of a blister - Matt, what is your opinion of that? Could a blister form on the inside of the tire as well?

Same thing happened to both of my back tires on I-80 in New Jersey. I thought my rear suspension was going to fall out but instead I ended up with two bubbles on my sidewalls and slightly bent rims.

LIke Matt H said - it's a belt slipping inside the tire and it should be replaced ASAP. The tire isn't likely to hold up to the expanding of the rubber and stretching of the tire as it forms to the road every rotation for very long.
