Does anyone know what Porsche recommends for an 86 NA water pump replacement?
I know what Clark's garage says, and I did the search of what most people use, but what is the OFFICIAL pump? No guesses please.
I called three different dealers and got three different answers.
951-106-921-X
951-106-021-10
944-106-021-PX
I found this searching Google
"944 Water Pump Application General Guidelines: All factory water pump kits supplied by Porsche Cars N.A.,Inc. use the guide rail and roller described in Service Technical Bulletin Group 1, Number 8713 (book D, page 49). Refer to this bulletin when replacing the water pumps on 1986 and earlier cars not already modified. "
Why is this so hard?

Actually, I may have answered this one myself.
I called Porsche NA who got me in contact with a dealer that specializes in the older Porsches. I will give the name because they were incredibly helpful - Stoddard Imported Car in Willoughby OH.
They said there are really three rebuild options now available for the NA, depending on if you have had the timing cover modification or not.
944-106-021-MX USA rebuilt original style (just like the one that came from the factory)
951-106-021-AX USA rebuild kit to be used with block off plate (can be used on turbo or NA without mod)
951-106-921-X German rebuilt with studs for belt guide. (timing cover already modified)
He said there's no difference between them performance or reliability wise. But I believe the one with the guard may be more forgiving if the belt gets loose.
Hope this helps clear things up and doesn't confuse the issue more.

smart a$$ comment coming up, only problem with that picture, both the tensioners have been rotated in the wrong direction to tension the belts. The cam belt tensioner should be rotated in a counterclockwise direction and the bal. belt tensioner should be rotated in a clockwise direction. Rotating the bal. tensioner the wrong way puts the belt too high, it will flap against the cover and the waterpump pulley, and rotating the cam belt pulley that way, means you don't get as much contact between the belt and the water pump pulley as you wuold if you turned it the other way.

The pump on my N/A did not have the whitish plastic thingy on the water pump - it was a flat surface there, with no holes for fasteners. It also had the belt guard. So, I assume that is 951-106-921-X.
The reason the dealer doesn't know is because he's too busy changing the blinker fluid on Cayennes to know anything about 924/944's anymore. The dealer simply doesn't see enough of these cars anymore to have any real expertise.

Man............I got caught again? Your right. I ran out and snapped a quick pic for a question that was asked, and never took notice of that aspect of it. They really are not tensioned yet..........as a matter of fact, the head is off this engine right now. Good eye!.........can't get away with anything.
