Default 951 Oil Filter Design

This is just a complaint that I have, and one of very few with the 951 I have to talk bad about the engineering of the oil filter design. I know space is very tight with this big four cylinder, but when changing the oil in your car, the filter leaks oil all over the place!!! It seems like there is no way to avoid this problem!! Anybody else want to throw their two cents in also???

Go to a remote oil filter design from Canton or Summit Racing.

There was a post here long back regarding this, solving the problem by using a plastic bag or something.......can't remember............

I've tried every little trick I've read about when changing the oil and in the end I just say screw it and let it drip...that's why they make paper towels and brake clean

the solution is to hang the car upside down; and then change the oil filter. This is the way porsche intended for the job to be done.

How would you hang the car upside down, that seems rather complicated?? Do any shops have the ability to do this?? hahaha

If you think that the oil filter is the only thing wrong with the 944 turbo design, wait until you have to replace a clutch or the rod bearings...

The way I do it and usually don't get any oil on anything is put rags, like 2, under the filter just cover the area. I don't get more then a few drops anyways because I take the filler cap off and plug for usually more then 15 mins before I touch the filter.

Yeah, I heard the clutch assembly is a BIG job, luckily I have 123,000 miles, and the original clutch with about 61% left. The owners before me took good care of it, but when it goes, there comes the bills and such.

But is in the high 61s or the low 61s??

If you are changing the oil in your spare time, drain the oil pan first when the car is still warm... unscrew the filter an hour later and there won't be a drip. If you're in a rush, get a cut-off 20oz soda bottle and place it under the filter on the housing. put a rag underneath it and let it drip into the bottle and onto the rag.
