should i sell my '89 944 n.a for 13,500?
ok guys, as you know my car is in the shop currently and they're basically redoing everything on the engine rebuild i did over the summer...but to make a long story short, i bought the car for 3800 and with all the money thats been put in the car it's come to about 14,000. anyway, a lady has come along that's offering 13,500 for my car. don't ask my why she just is...should i sell it? if i do my parents will never get me another 944..i couldn't even do so with the money because my parents would only give me 4 grand...the rest is their money that they put in...so i'm just looking for a few perspectives from you guys...

Definitely sell it! I don't know whats been put into your car, but you will never see that offer come along again.
If the sale goes through you should also send a letter to Excellence Magazine with the sale price and details about the car. If they get enough high-price 944 sales, perhaps the valuations will increase, particularly the rare 2.7L.
Regarding the deal with the parents, you have an opportunity here to even up so that everyone wins. You mention that they've helped you by putting some money in the car. If you hold on to it, your parents will almost undoubtedly lose some or all of that money. You still get to walk away from the deal with $4K in your pocket, which is more than what you bought the car for initially.
Hope it all works out!

Yikes! $13500!!! If you don't sell yours let me know - I'll buy one and sell it to her!
If you explain to your parents that your deft marketing skills have allowed them to recoup their costs, you should be able to talk them into another one. You may have to show them some posts from Rennlist to prove how reliable most of these cars are.
At least that's the story I'd go in with if I was trying to pee up the same tree.
Good Luck!

Yes, the price offered is crazy-high. Who knows, she may come to her senses before a deal is done.
I guess I would sell, and stay away from getting into projects until you can afford them. Because your parents had to fork over the $$, you do have an obligation. If it had been all your money, who knows, you may actually be so pleased with the car that you would not let go of it. A lot of people have spent more on a car than its worth, but if it is a "dream" car for them (that they are not planning on selling) then the question of value becomes totally different.
Let us know if you do sell for that amount though, that would be very notable!
Thanks,
Allan

haha yes my mom knows who this lady is. she's one of her coworkers at the bank. and nope it's not a scam. i didn't believe it at first but it turned out to be for real. i'm just really confused as to what i should do. the smart thing to do would be to definitely sell it of course (as everyone has made clear), it's just that there is a certain sentimental attachment. the attachment i have is probably not worth keeping the car if i can sell it for that much, but it is already a set in stone fact that i would not get a 944 again. that's kind of sad i guess because to tell you the truth their plan is to buy me a civic from the dealer
