OK what about using a stock late DME and the 968 MAF? Are the connections to the DME alot different?

i think its a failed cause? if you have to have custom chips, Ild rather just buy aftermarket. with a custom chip ( i cant imagine that comes cheap ), it should be tuned to your car, and if you do it yourself, you need to know what type of ic's are needed, you'ld need a burner, and you'ld need sometype of spec to map out what should be written and what can be changed, and to what extent.
too much work for a poor mans afm (dont take that literally, i love to fab stuff when i can).

all imho of course. anyone is welcome to prove me wronge, ild love an easy solution.

Custom chips can be had relatively cheap. My HR MAF is nothing more than a Ford MAF sensor. You need someway to control fuel (ala ARC-2). It can certainly be done, the question is what is it worth to you? I doubt you would see significant gains.

Maybe not. I seem to recall the E30 M3 that Grassroots Motorsports had as a project a few years ago gaining something like 12 hp with the MAF kit they installed.

E30 M3 turns a few more Revs than does an S2, makes its power in a totally different area and only gained across a small portion of the upper rev range (if memory serves). Either way what is 12HP worth to you? By the time you are done you are going to spend at least 650 dollars.

Just sayin'.

If you think about it though, look at some of the dumb things we spend money on. How often do you see questions around here about which chip is best for an NA, or will a different cam help, etc. How much power will you gain from those and will it be useable. I've read Joe's claims that he has seen dyno results of 2-3 for a good chip, so what's that, like $100.00 per HP? Even some of the high end mods some of you turbo folks are buying only net a comparable ratio.

BTW, if you look at their dyno results, the increases were actually across the entire rev range. They did have an issue where they were running quite lean. I don't recall what they did about that. I imagine if they took care of that they would have gained more power, no?

Could have, the two motors arent all that comparable. I am not saying there will not be a gain. There WILL be a gain, the matter is what is that gain worth?

I have long said NA chips dont make enough HP to be worthwhile (the others say but it does X X and X, which I also dont necessarily agree with).

In a car that is already relatively powerful, has good throttle response, and is fun to drive (S2) is 12 HP worth a minimum of 650+ dollars? I dont know, maybe it is. Somehow, I doubt it.

As to us Turbo folks, there comes a time when you are trying to extract every last HP when 2 or 3K dollars for a part seems reasonable, it is a sickness I tell you. There is a load of power to be made from 944 Turbos that we dont come close to touching, I suspect that in a few years, most of the mods being done currently will be replaced by much more wild things. At least, if I can ever get off my **** and try them out.
