Default Clutch Noise Diagnosis For You Guys

Just did a search and still have questions?

Just had following work done:
*Lindsey Racing Spec Stage II & lightened Clutch
*New Fidanza Alum. flywheel
*Speed 6 Racing "Ultimate" short shift kit. (One with the linkage and shift lever)
*Genuine Porsche motor Mounts
*Seals, bolts, etc...All the while your in there stuff!

I have a little clutch chatter in first and second when I let off the gas, lowering the RPM's. Sounds the same as when you take off in the wrong gear (to high a gear) It stops when I engage the clutch pedal. The clutch operates great and drives wonderful otherwise. But it's a shame I spend all that $$$ on "The Works" and it sounds like I need a new clutch during slow drives.

I called the German Auto Mech. who installed. He stated it was normal. He asked if it was a groaning from the rear (meaning trans issues) or a grinding-rattle from the front (normal clutch). He advised it was my new clutch and normal. Stating that it is why Porsche has an original rubber centered clutch - that they don't make that noise. But with me upgrading to a spring loaded - then it will.

Another post stated they spoke to Dave Lindsey about same type rattle and he stated that it will go away after time.
Another post stated that it's a sound he just had to get use to....Comes with owning such a clutch.

This sound right to ya'll out there?

Mine had a slight chatter at first, but nothing real loud. It still does make some noise, but nothing too obvious unless you're really listening.
I want to see the work they've done too. I'm going to have my shift rod replaced soon unless I like your shift kit better.
EDIT: it looks like the rod I'm talking about is different. I meant the one going from the shifter back to the tranny.
Call me and let me know when I can see all the new toys.

I have basically the same set-up and the same chattering while coasting in 1st, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd at low speeds. I heard it's due to the lightened FW, mostly. Don't forget that our cars are known to have noisy gearboxes as a result of the noisy 5th gear idler anyway.

But had a friend tell me this as well:
Get another opinion... quick! There should be zero
noise coming from the clutch. Period. When the clutch
is not engaged, the entire clutch assembly is locked
in place and spins as a unit with the flywheel. There
is nothing to make a noise. When the clutch is
engaged, the throw out bearing pushes on the pressure
plate fingers, but the spinning is accomplished within
the throw out bearing, so the most noise you can have
is a little bearing whine, but a new bearing should
produce zero noise. Period. If the noise is coming
from the bell housing, then there is some type problem
developing. The sprung hub clutch disc will not make
any noise. Your mechanic is full of ****. Take the car
to a shop that is experienced with clutches and let
them listen. A clutch is a clutch. They all work the
same and are similar in design and usuage. So if you
can talk to someone locally who does clutches for a
living, take it to them and get a diagonsis. Take the
car out and run it at 40 mph with the windows down and
listen. Does it make a noise? Kick it into neutral
without engaging the clutch and listen as the car
slows. Try again, but leave the car in gear and slow
again. What noises are you hearing? If you hear a
noise when slowing in gear, but quiet when slowing in
neutral, probably a tranny problem or CV joint. CV
joints need re-greasing annually or so. This might be
the source of the noise. They usually make a clicking
sound when in need of maintenance.Any metal to metal
grinding noise is bad bad bad.

Naw. Noise is normal for these clutches... the rubber centered ones did damper noise, the new ones don't...I'd even say they amplify it...but it's normal.

If you want another opinion, try Mike at Memphis MotorWerks on Macon Road in Cordova. He does much of the work on my car and runs a great shop - works with race cars tooo, so I'm sure he's see one before. I'm sure he could tell you if it's okay or not.
