What type of engine mounts did you install a year ago? From what I've read on the forums here, the original Porsche OEM mounts seem to be the way to go. They are more expensive but they are supposed to last a lot longer.
I've read that some of the less expensive OEM replacement motor mounts didin't even last a year. It could be your problem. Good luck.

For my money though I would spend 15 minutes and take off the belt cover just to check that things are ok. I had a bolt back out on me that shredded my balance belt. Luckily it didn't wrap the drive belt at the same time.
If it is that bad, don't play around...check it out.

I have had a balance shaft belt jump a tooth and boy did the motor vibrate.
If the rubber center clutch was gone, you would have a noticable "clunk" sound when the clutch was engauged.

hm, i helped work on nine 44's moms 944, the rubber clutch went out,or was going. It had almost no signs except when you reved it up, it had a knock or tick like almost a rod bearing, but also made a hella vibration at 3k or so rpms.

I'm going to add another vote for balance shaft belt issues. Whatever you do, don't drive it again until you verify what the issue is.
Are your front seals leaking at all?
I agree with Pete, motor mounts would be smoothed out at that RPM range. Bad motor mounts show their symptoms usually at idle to around 1500rpm tops.

My motor mounts were done mostly by Andy ( I just swore a lot..) in under 60 minutes. Most of the time spent was getting the passenger side mount back in. I think If I was out of his way it would have been MUCH less time.

This was exactly how mine was with bad mounts.

I've never heard of motor mounts causing a vibration up around 2700. Usually, motor mounts will give you a rough feeling at idle which smooths out at around 1800. I vote for balance shaft. The engine can make an awful sound if the balance belt is not on right.
