I've done a lot of searches on this, but I still haven't found a definite answer to my question.

I'm thinking about changing my current wheels (phone dials, 7 x 15) to fuchs wheels with 7 x 16 fronts and 8 x 16 rears on my 85.5.

Now I know I can get the 7 x 16's with a 23.3 mm offset for the fronts. But in regards to the rear is it better to go with the 23.3 mm offset 8 x 16 (951 type) or the 10.6 mm (911 type).

It seems to me that the 911 type may stick out too far and go past the rear wheel well lip.

Anyone using either or? Thanks.

 

I have 911 offsets on my '86, There are pro's and con's either way.
The 911 wheels fit the '85.5-86 cars better because the offset makes up for the spacer that the factory installed on the earlier cars but left off of ours. OTOH, if you have or plan to upgrade to 951 brakes, the 911 wheels will not clear them. BTW, in spite of having the same offset, the 7" 951 and 7" 911 wheels are NOT the same.

 

Dave: Not all the 911 Fuchs would fit, the 944 turbo cars that came with Fuchs wheels had/have 951 part numbers not 911. That is due to the brake caliper clearance.

Ok, so going back to the original topic, is there any real visual diferences between the 951 fuchs and the 911 fuchs. I know there are some differences at the back of the wheel where it mounts, but I thought I read somewhere that the 911 fuchs have a slightly deeper dish?

Hosrom_951, I believe the 951 fuchs weight around 18 - 19 lbs depending on depth.

 

18~19lbs, that's almost 8kg.......i believe they are lighter? when i was at the tire shop last month, i carried the front rim (16x7) with 3 fingers w/o any problems (no tired installed yet). But it didn't feel like 18lbs........ah wait, i work out

 

The 911 wheels do have a little more dish. The weight is also a bit lighter than 18 lbs, IIRC the 7s are ~14 lb and the 8s are a lb or two more, also the 911 wheels are about a half lb heavier than the 951 wheels.

Now I feel less like an old man, I lift them with 2 fingers usually, WITH tires

 

If you have no desire to upgrade to 951 brakes, go with the 911 fuchs. The 16x8 (911 offset) fill out the rear wheel well much better. I have the 911 offsets on my 86 (front and rear) so they will fit your car without any rubbing issues.

Nicely done chart, too bad the weights are inaccurate. FWIW, a 16x7 Fuchs weighs a couple pounds less than a 15x7 phonedial, do you think a 16x7 PD weighs less than a 15x7 PD?

 

When you compare a 16X8" 911 fuch to a 16X8" 951 fuch, the 911 wheel will have a deeper-dish appearance to the outside. It will have more lip and the pedals will be set back a little further in the wheel. In order to cram the large brake calipers behind a set of fuch wheels on a 951, the wheel had to be slightly changed by pushing the pedals out (thus losing some lip) and carving the back of the pedals out slightly.

I personally like the look of 911 fuchs better, but from a function vs. form argument, they lose. You are severely limited on brake choices with them. Now for most people, that would be OK, because they never plan on upgrading braking systems.

I have a 16X7 911 Fuch at home (mounted on the wall as a clock), I can take a photo of that next to a 16X7 951 Fuch if you need me to.

As above, I have the 911 wheels and while I didn't plan on a brake upgrade when I put them on the car they are now the thing holding me back from installing bigger brakes (I can get the brakes past my wife, but brakes AND another set of Fuchs would be a problem ). In the meantime, I've gone to better pads (KFP), braided lines and better fluid and I've yet to see any noticable fade, even for DE and autox use
