Default Is the power steering cooler really necessary?

Ok, so Im digging through the box of parts for my S3 conversion, and came across the power steering cooler. I didnt realize what it was before, it hit me just now.
Is this thing really necessary? Ive never seen it on another car, ever. The only possible explanation I could think would be that the system heats up very high on the highway....

Any thoughts?

If you overfill the PS fluid you quickly learn how much it heats and expands with the cooler in place. Maybe with synthetic fluid it'd be OK without a cooler but you would have to underfill it and check it a lot.

Most cars have a loop for power steering cooling - they're different size and shape, but it's important to have. Highway is the coolest time for PS, when there's no turning. AutoX is the hottest it'll get, some Corvettes boil the fluid out of the container on the autoX course.

Really?... I thought it was useless!
It was right in the way when I was working on a friend's 944, and I really considered just removing it =)
I guess I won't now.
Although, I do run synthetic ATF in the power steering (nothing but the best for my baby), since I just rebuilt the rack and pump.

Who needs the ps system anyways. Back to the point like everyone said it will come out the top and make a big mess if it's filled to much. It will cause to much pressure if it's overful which isn't good for the ps system esp if you have older seals.

It can never have too much pressure in the P/S system, The pump can only turn so fast and if the fluid flow is to great it will vent it out. So over filling wont cause too much pressure on a normal P/s system

I already installed the power steering system, but I left the blasted cooler off. Should I go through the hassle of installing it?
