Default Vibration @ 4000 RPM **UPDATE**FIXED**

Previous thread here:

Well it in fact WAS the balance shaft sprocket.

Lower one to be exact.

180 degrees out.

What we were unable to figure out on the first go round was that there are (2) TWO keyways on the sprocket, but only (1) ONE on the balance shaft......

SO, even though the "O" was visible through the sprocket cover plate, it wasn't until removing the cover plate that we could see the other keyway on the sprocket. We could also see how the PO's mechanic probably rotated the balance shaft to be able to see the keyway, but did not compensate by rotating the sprocket too.

Still has a little vibration in the shifter, but nothing like what was happening before. I will look into how/what they did when installing the new shifter and bushing.

So, besides having to pull the timing belt cover afterwards to tighten the belt more (was slapping pretty good)and having the hood close on my bald head, it was a freaking absolutely awesome day.... Car runs a lot better, not as "muted" or "bogged down" as before

Thanks George and Kevin Texas Grease Slingers ROCK....

On one other note, the car passed Texas emission/safety inspection Sunday . Only needed a new gas cap. Much better than the Silver one has ever done

Nice job. I also have a vibration at 2k. Would that be the same thing? I also have a vibration in my shifter from 3-4k.

Way to go, James! I'm close to working on my 2 cars, so maybe some of your success will rub off.

Even being off by 2 teeth will cause vibration. Adjusting balance shafts can make ALL the difference. I suggest everyone that experiences it, look into balance shaft alignment.

They key (no pun intended) is using the correct keyway in the cog. When we looked at it the first time everyone said they could look right and still be wrong. I asked several times how that could happen and nobody responded.

Once we pulled off the balance shaft cog it was quickly very clear. Within a minute of taking it off and looking in the FSM I knew we had the answer.

I guess next week we'll have to pull the shifter and see what they screwed up there.

Maybe next week, if we don't all float away, we can do my timing/balance belts. I feel MUCH more confident about doing them knowing that we don't really have to take the crank pulley off.

I'm game. Will be off Mon - Thur.

I'll be showing off my new Sport Seats They are freaking beautiful...

While cleaning the carpet tonight during the seat swap, found 2 speaker crossover boxes for the stereo. Just jammed under the carpet by the A/C blower Plus a stainless steel Buck knife and .06......

Cleaned up all that crap and cleaned the gang ground under the main fuse panel. Installed a piece of Fat Mat on the passenger side floorboard as well.

Not sure of my schedule, yet but if George cannot make it maybe you could pick up the spanners, tension gauge, and flywheel lock. I know we could knock it out in a couple of hours.

You bet Kevin. Now that I've done it a few times it's not really a big deal. Shoot with Pete's we had to change the front main seal and the water pump. They took most of the time. The belts can be done in a few hours.

The balance shaft has two keyways. So which one did you end up using for the sprocket? I think I may have the same problem. I just did belts and I put it all back together the way it was. The car has had the vibration problem since before I bought it but I thought it was a cv joint or something in the tranny. I'm starting to think I could be 180 degrees out on the bottom shaft though. With the engine locked down at TDC for #1 I have the balance shafts oriented with the sprocket keyway on the top of the shaft. Is this right or should one of them be facing down? I would be so happy if that were the only problem.
Thanks

PS, if you have the flywheel lock it's no big deal taking the crankshaft bolt out, as long as you have a big torque wrench to put it back in (155 ftlbs I think).

I retimed my balance shafts last weekend and it made a massive difference on how smooth the car was. I pretty much followed the instructions at Clark's Garage. Once I saw where to align the balance shafts I felt like an idiot for not seeing it myself.
