Evil-bay? I think not!

Who called it evil-bay recently? Some people **** and moan about e-bay, usually the ones who know little about it. Check out the deal someone just got. There are some great deals out there, and the market determines the winners. Ebay is the international free-market system at its very best imo. No political BS, just people doing business one to one.

Just because the auction ended, dosent necesarily mean hes got the item yet, or will get the item.
I can vouch that ive gotten burned by people who were 'established' sellers with 30+ positive feedback.

I frequently call it evil-Bay because I have been scammed more often then I'd like to admit.
* I had a buyer who's PayPal "eCheck" bounced -- out $50.
* Paid $250 for a case of R12 -- never received (still trying to recover money)
* Numerous occasions when items are arguably worse than described
But, at the same time, I've made some major scores
* $150 for a P9201 tool, $8500 for a pristine Silverossa 88TS, and my GF's car.
You can benefit, but it can also cost you -- and they don't advertise the inherent riskiness of these auctions. It's a gambling game in which I am losing money -- hence evil.

eBay has always been pretty good to me. I'm at 85+ transactions in my current account over the last 5 years and had nothing but great success - on both the buyer and seller side of things...
But then again, it wasn't until only very recently that i started doing eBay motors. Most of the horror stories i've heard have related to either laptop computers, or items off eBay motors...

Last year I sold my RX7 using ebay. A guy who lived about an hour and a half from me came to look at the car. Before he came I told him a non negotiable number that would make me end the auction early.
Of course the car was better than described. He gave me the cash, i followed him and drove it to his house. he drove me to the train and the deal was done.
no damage in transit etc. ebay found me a buyer that other channels may not have.
I got my gray S2 from the sunday times, by brothers 84 from rennlist classifieds, my brothers 89 NA and my Z28 from autotrader. I would buy a car from ebay as long as I could see it in the flesh first.

Yup, my car was on e-bay when I saw it. The auction ended without meeting reserve, so I went over there with cash and bought the car for far less then what he expected to get on ebay

What did i just say? I got scammed by someone with 230 100% feedback within the last 6 months. He sold 2 ppl his "last 2 watches" and then stopped ebaying. Were both out 230 bucks.
Some things you cant forsee.. There is risk on ebay no matter how intuitive you are.

I disagree on ebay being bad. Check username Yieldsign2. I've sold probably 3000-5000 dollars of items, and bought probably 5-6000 dollars worth of stuff. (i don't keep good records obviously). Items include everything from misc wires for computer speakers, to 3 vehicles i've bought (my 944, two range rovers) and 2 laptops. I don't think i've ever been scammed. Just keep your eyes out, back yourself up with records, receipts, research sellers first... It ends up okay!
EDIT - OUCH! I just thought about it, in the last 3 years or so, i've spent almost 7,000 on cars and laptops alone...
I really never thought about it. I have no idea how I ever made that much money to buy stuff like that! :/ No wonder i'm poor.

The difference is 'most' of us on this Forum are honest people...we expect the same from others. In that respect I am naive but I can smell stink on eBay from a 1/4 mile. Any time the seller has nothing but pos feedback, I check and see if it's all as a buyer of $1 crap to set up a history...anyone can phony up a history. Out of 6 transactions I am 6 for 6 in success. It's all what you buy and how you buy. Personally I bet that seller of the intake won't pack that thing for a $.99 sale, that's 1/3 of scrap metal value. Buyer Beware...Buyer be Quick...the eBay Mantra. I avoid anything over $50 myself.

i don't like the terms on alot of the car auctions. like "$2000 due immediately upon auction end" type stuff. if you haven't already seen the car, if you go to pick it up and the car is misrepresented, i think it would be difficult to get the money back.
