Talking Where do I find a new / used DME computer

Hey guys,

I am looking for a new or used DME computer, where do I find one?

I looked at paragons website and cant seem to find one.

Is this an easy thing to replace myself? Or do I pay the garage to do it?

Thanks as always.

You probably mean the timing belt. IMO Putting the belt back on a tooth off cannot cause this sort of behavior. What sort of car is it?

Before you replace the unit, why not re-solder the joints? I'm told that often cures the likely faults, and it's a cheap fix. Then, if no luck, start considering more expensive options.

Well, for one, I am totally mechanically illiterate......

Is there somewhere on the net that shows how to do that?

Search Rennlist forums for keywords "DME too hot" for an excellent thread and cross-references, and also check Clark Fletcher's website about resoldering the DME relay.

Your problem may be the relay, as opposed to the DME itself, as our original relays reportedly have a checkered past. Porsche has an upgraded DME relay for <$20 at better parts places, such as Zims, Paragon, or BMA.

I'm having some non-start problems, so have read as much as I could find lately on DME/KLR/relay issues. After corresponding with folks much more knowledgeable than me, I surmise that many people wind up replacing DMEs needlessly. In other words, they spend several hundred dollars to replace a unit that only needed a few solder joints refreshed in 5 minutes with a $10 Radio Shack soldering iron. Again, I'm just now learning and claim no personal expertise whatever, but folks who know about these things have suggested the solders around heat sinks, such as the ignition driver, and/or ribbon cable connnections, are common failure points: Re-flow the solder, which can crack with age on these old cars.

Somebody else replaced the ignition driver (which reportedly tends to overheat and stress the joints) with an inexpensive transistor.

At the very least, do continuity checks with a multimeter.

But, with all things electronic, make sure you are properly grounded.

First, disconnect the car battery before doing anything further.

polo, did the shop finally diagnose the problem to be related to the DME?

Check with the following:
www.porschepartsoftexas.com
www.partsheaven.com

Or you can check with a local junkyard to see if they have an 86-88 n/a that in the yard. The unit is very easy to remove. Pull back the carpet on the passenger side, take a phillips head screwdriver (not a hammer) and remove the wooden board, the DME is under the metal brackets, unplug the big computer cable from it and remove. When you go to install it in your car, disconnect the negative battery cable before you do this.

...or you can buy the I have! I have DME from an '88 924S (identical DME as in '88 944 n/a). Already packed and ready to ship. It came out of a strong running good idling car that got T-boned and is now a parts car. $100 OBO...

ckkrause, I think the 88 924S has higher compression than his 86 n/a thus the chip may be different.

Legoland-

You are right, I'd just had my evening cocktail and I read '88 rather than '86... Now I think I'll have another!!!!

I have one out of an 85.5 N/A.
I'll take a hundred even for it.
