ANd most people have no idea how much, base, clear, hardeners, colorbuild, etc...costs..! MAterials alone if you do the work yourself would cost you over 1000 bucks, if you done have any of these basic things like hardeners and reducers, etc...Or you could take a step down and use some cheaper paint also..But remember its not just paint, its an entire system of products to achieve a paint job....I would say that our going rate for a small car, with the costumer taking it apart has been 2500 plus you buy the base and clear....Otherwise its just not worth it..Insurance jobs is where the money is at...

True most body shops aren't interested in re-sprays. You'll need to search around in your area. My car is due back from the painters this week. Had it re-sprayed the original s baltic blue color. Body shop color sanded and polished the paint as well!! The results are incredible.. I'll post some pics in the following weeks.

Thanks,

5k+ seems overboard in my opinion. I still dont get tearing your car down to paint unless your doing a complete restoration on it. A "repsray" in my terms on a quality paint job is wetsanding the car. Wich you could do your self if you know how to prep it. To repaint my 928 it was around 400$ for the paint, clear, primer, sand paper, and some other stuff. I used dupont chromabase paint wich is very good paint.

I would not paint the doorjambs if you are going the same color. I didnt repaint mine as i used the identical factory color and the jambs look new still. But tearing the carpet out? I dont get that.

I got free labor on my paint job because my dad painted it..

Look around at diffrent shops and ask to see pictures of thier paint jobs. Most shops keep a photo album of paint jobs they have done. I would say you could get a nice paint job done for around 2500-3500. If you go the same color costs will be cheaper. If you go a diffrent color its going to be alot of work painting under the hood and rear hatch, door jambs ect.

FULL- do it right this time...and never worry about this again! Also, do a full respray if you intend to keep the car for awhile.

It depends on howanal retentive you are. Having a few panels fresh and pristine and other spots original and weathered would frost me.

Drive it to Cinci and have XSboost do it. You can save yourself labor with hands on during disassembly, prep and reassembly. You will NOT be disappointed with the extremely nice quality of his work.

He would treat it with the same care as if it was his own.

I had my 944 repainted 2.5 years ago. Every place I went to said that it would be between $5-8k for a good (no, not "great" but "good") paint job. More if I wanted it to actually be concourse-quality. While I couldn't help but feel that I was victim to "Porsche markup", there wasn't much I could do since that's what everyone was charging.

I ended up stripping the car down myself and taking it to Maaco for their dual-stage paint job. They wanted $1.6k, including doing some body work. Add on another $1k for new seals, hood crest, beer, etc., and I had about $3k spent.

It's not a perfect paint job, and even though other Rennlisters who've seen the car have told me that I should still show it, I don't think it'll do well. There are a few flaws here and there. But I can live with those flaws for the $3-6k that I didn't spend.

First pic is how I dropped it off, the second pic was taken towards the end of the summer. All in all, I'm satisfied.

BB.

You can have a respray done without removing everything, although the more you remove the better it looks. I am going to remove the bumpers, header panel (has a dent in it), headlight covers, hatch, door handles and mirrors. The painter will use lift tape around the windshield and quarter glass to have a no-line job.

Maaco's not so bad..
I paid $1k for their paintjob, and the yellow looks great.
Comes with a 3 year warrenty too.

Yeah, the quality varies from shop to shop. The best bet is to look at the other cars they are working on. Also, figure out which paint level those cars have.

The reason so many of these shops get a bad rep is because people often go for the $200 special which usually sucks. However, the higher level isn't too bad.

If you strip it down yourself and eliminate all the places where you would have tape lines (since that's where the failures will most likely occur) you should have a pretty good job.

I find this thread very interesting, as I may elect to do something similar in the future. For those with some experience, what are good paint systems for applying over the factory paint? (I am assuming that the factory paint would only be scuffed or sanded enough for good paint adhesion, not removed to bare metal - is this even correct?)

I would not want to go to bare metal and risk losing some of the zinc layer.

Thanks!

I get 2 stage paint jobs wetsanded and polished (no orange peels) for $1k. If you start to remove everything, that's a different story.
