Default What's a gearbox cost???

I think I have broken a gear in my 1986 944 turbo. When the car is running, there is a pretty loud rattle in the rear that stops when I press the clutch. It speeds up as the rpms increase. I do not have a reverse. The shifter goes to where it should, but there is no gear there. Sounds like a broken gear, right? Anyone know what a new, rebuilt or used gearbox costs? I'm sure it will be cheaper than trying to repair the one I have. Any ideas? Anyone have one for sale?

Yep, we have them for sale. Price varies by desirability (i.e. with LSD costs more than without).

Could someone give me a ballpark figure? I'm trying to decide which direction to go with this. Any ideas??? I do not need LSD, this is strictly a driver, never raced. Doesn't even have a chip or anything. So just the non-LSD gearbox. What do you think, moneywise???

I have been trying to sell my '86 Turbo non-LSD tranny for $550. It is in perfect condition with only 60k miles. This came out of my car to swap in a LSD unit. I sold my car with the LSD tranny so this is a perfect non-LSD tranny with cooler for someone.

That's a good deal oil slick, ii'd do that

Btw, why do some people on this list insist on putting their car, other than porsche, in their sig, and not include their porsche?
It's great that you have a 98 jaguar with 370hp,,, but I think more people would benefit from you including your porsche year and model in the sig. I won't get into the avatar at this time.

911sickness-
I have no idea if that's a good price or not, but if it is... I'm very interested! I definately need one. Assuming I only have a broken gear (I'm hoping!!!) will the new gearbox be all I need? How hard is it to swap it out? And is that price high? Low? Average? My mechanic won't be in till tomorrow, so any help today would be greatly appreciated!

For a 944 turbo tranny that is a good price. I paid $550 for my 87 S tranny. Most of the turbo transmissions I have seen over the last 6 months have been going for $650 to $750.

Devon,
Actually, I just got this 951 2 weeks ago and promptly broke it. I was without a Porsche for a little while, so I just put my driver on there. Terribly sorry to insinuate that I would drive anything other that a Porsche, but at least the Jag ain't broke, right? Actually, I change cars so much, it's hard for me to keep up. I'll get right on that for you! What's wrong with my AV? I think the Jag is reeeel purty!

This is a steal as others can confirm. I can't believe no one has bought it yet. Especially since I know this one is perfect. When you buy it from a dismantler you never really know the true condition of the transmission. They charge higher prices and even though they have some sort of warranty, you still need to pay for the labor to put it in a second or third time.

Now how do I ship this thing? Which shipping company? I wish someone local would just buy it and pick it up from me to save the hassle.

If you werent on the oppsite coast from me I would buy as a spare for that price!
As far as shipping goes any commercial shipper like BAX global will ship it for you.
Will be about $100 from coast to coast.

I seriously considered buying that tranny -- I decided not to b/c I didn't want the taller Turbo gearing. That is a really good price for a turbo tranny.

I like the sig now.

Hehe, I wasn't really steamed or anything, just commenting on something I see alot. Was nothing personal! It's just hard and annoying when people ask questions and sometimes don't mention what car they have, and it's not in their signatures.

Nothing's "wrong" with your avatar,,,, except I think the 951's purtier.

911sickness-
I'll probably take it for that. I need to get the car over to my wrench and make sure that is all it needs. I also need to make sure he will install it and not require me to use one that he gets. I caught him at home today and he said he can get an LSD box for $800 and charge me $250 to install it. It would have a warranty and he said he eats the labor if it fails and he has to re-install it. That's pretty tempting, but if yours has only 60k on it and is in perfect shape and all, I don't know how important the warranty is and the LSD means nothing to me. I can let you know by Tuesday at the latest. Why don't you email me your contact number and I'll get with you asap. You can email me at pauldobbs@hotmail.com

Thanks.

$1050 LSD installed with a warranty, you can't beat that.

Peckster-
That sounds pretty fair, I think. I just don't know if I really need a warranty. This is a street-only car and I'm not rough on it at all. I've never broken a gear in ANY car before, so I can't imagine it will happen again. A friend actually broke this one for me. I don't think I have the full story, but I think maybe he went from 5th to 4th with a detour to "R", you know? We are working out who will pay for what and I know it was an accident, so I'm not too mad. Could have happened to anyone (who doesn't know how to drive!) Anyway, Gotta get it opened and see what all is broken. It will still drive in all but reverse, but it make a heck of a racket if the rpms are just right. We'll see!
