Ahhh, I can see clearly now.
I wonder though, what is the actual weight difference between the chassis's themselves?
Maybe when I finish stripping this 951 I'll see if the junker will weigh it.

You should easily get it under 2700 lbs. Tifo's car is a tick over 2500 lbs. and it's still pretty civilized on the street. Strip the AC, the back seat, and swap in some racing seats and it should get pretty light. The fiberglass Carrera GT body panels would also be lighter than the factory sheetmetal.
Swapping the interiors would be a lot of trouble. It may be easier to fab a new dash panel with aftermarket gauges.
I say go for it.

No, no, not the CGT body panels. Keep is totally stock on the outside. Maybe just roll the fenders slightly and go with an adjustable ride height kit so you can fit bigger tires under the fenders without rub. But keep it visually a basic 924S. Sleepy looking with a hand full of bitch slap under the hood.

Hmm. Jeremy's is at 2500 huh? Mine must be pretty close to that at this point as I have about all the deletes and swaps on my 924S as he has on his 944. If not now it will be when I finally install the fiberglass european bumpers.

IIRC Jeremy's car weighed in at something like 2552 lbs. on a scale at a local trucking place. I'm sure he'll jump in here when he sees this thread.

You know it well, and the wonderfully thought out and executed "Ian Special" that now resides in my garage is a living testimony! I can't get over how well balanced it is, Ian. Just as Porsche, as you increased horsepower, you increased everything else perfectly to match! With that in mind, I am really excited to hear about this possible project. I see visions of a 924 Carrera GTS floating around right now! Go for it!

the guy on the 924board who almost did the swap goes by the username "zuffen." good guy, but after purchasing a couple of 951 parts cars, he decided there would be too much fabrication and that he didn't have the time. offered to sell me all the 951 goodies, but i can't make any big moves 'til i'm done with school. i believe he's currently enjoying the 2.0L 924 turbo (931).

i'm considering this swap as a future project. my car is also quite light already as the sport editions had power option deleted and lightweight seat fabric rather than leather (which is now disintegrating). hopefully, i'll be following suit with the euro bumpers in the future as well.

given the badges on the front of our cars, it seems that building a true sleeper can be rather difficult. however, i consider a lightweight 924S with a tastefully upgraded 951 powerplant to be a very worthwhile project.

The 951 chassis also weighs a good 100 lbs more.

Provided that you have all of the wiring harness from the donor 951, I think the swap is do-able. I *think* the trans mounts in the rear might be different, someone with more experience might want to verify that. You'd of course need to make provisions for a real boost gauge (well, the stock 951 gauge is worthless anyway). If you don't change the front spindles the speedo will still work fine, if you swap to a 951 spindle/brake setup, you'll need to tap the 951 spindle for the odo-drive or modify the odo to read from the 951 trans plug. I'm not certain that the stock 951 intercooler will fit under the 931 vented header panel. I think it is too big. You might need to re-locate the intercooler down lower, or "carve out" some of the area under the header panel.

Weight reduction should be a piece of cake. Mine weighed in at 2530lbs a few months back, and that was with a 1/2 tank of gas. I have made a few small changes since then, it is probably about 20lbs lighter at the moment. (I wish taking weight back off of my **** is as easy as it is on the car ) For a daily driver I wouldn't recommend to go crazy with the weight reduction, but for a weekend toy you can get it down there pretty easily and still retain enough streetability.

Manning makes a good point about the brakes, etc, as being the same on the 924 CGT cars as the early 944 and 924S cars. Brakes probably need not be a priority for that reason, and remember the lighter the car is, the less brakes you will need to haul it down to a stop. Honestly, at this time I think my S4/951S calipers are total overkill on a 2500lb car. It's a bit "touchy". 951 stock brakes would probably be the most brake you would ever be able to use on that car.

I am torn as to the stealth look verses the 924CGT look. A bone stock looking 924S with 951 power would be a total sleeper on the street. Hwever, if one is after driving pleasure AND looks, a 924CGT look-alike would be awesome. Larger fenders would allow the use of 16" Fuchs (and if they were 951 Fuchs the use of the 951 calipers), and the tacked-on rear fenders really look retro and muscular at the same time. Most people are going to have no real idea what the car is in the 924CGT guise anyway ("Hey, is that an old 944?"). Only those in the know would figure out that there is probably something special under the hood, just by looking at it.

Sounds like an interesting project..............

Thanks all for the comments.

Tifo, I'm not sure on the transmission, but I know I can figure that out tonight when I have the 924 to give it a once over. (prospective buyer is taking the 968 to have it looked at, and I get to look over the 924S). So i'll put it up in the air and have a look at the transmission mounts.

Wish me luck, today is a big day to figure out if this will happen...
