** My first lesson on Rennlist was Timing Belts
When I first heard about this website from the person currently working on my car the very 1st thing I learned because of so many posts (and from him) was about swaping out your timing belt. The po did not have any record so of course I am having that done right now. Just curious though, why would porsche make such great cars but create a situation where the timing belt needs to be swapped out every 30k miles (40k pushing it)? This is something that has perplexed me. On every other car I have ever owned ( granted most were pos ) I never had to switch out a timing belt/chain. Why is porsche so differnt?

Aluminum block (lighter) more expanding contraction, harder to do with chain, trying to save weight I imagine.
This NA engine was a very large 4 cylinder at the time. 2.5 liter back then, was rarely gone beyond. Hence all the fooling with balance shafts and all this. They were pushing it putting this high displacement in a 4 cylinder, so things are bound to wear. hence why we can't modify our engines much.. they are pretty much already modded to the max.
