Angry 944Racing Short Shift Does Not Fit!

Came home tonight to put in my short shift kit from the group buy. I get it all apart and reassembling and go to put the 944Racing piece onto the transmission shaft the d#mn hole is too small. I cleaned the shaft real good, put a little oil on it, deburred the new part, alligned properly and it does not fit! I pushed and thought about a hammer but quickly realized that I did not want to hammer on the shaft that changes the gears inside, duh.

So I will take it to work tomorrow and open up the hole a little. We have a set of reams that I will try first. If they are not the right size I will do it the time honored way with a round file. My round files are prolly still in my ex's garage. So ok I will work it out.

I don't know what could be different about my transmission. Only thing is that it is an S model but all they changed was the ratios so I can't imagine that shaft being a different size. Anyone else have this problem?

There are 2 sizes of shift rods. God only knows why. My 2 87's had different sizes because my short shifter wouldn't fit my 924.

The 968 ssk wasn't right the first time out for some cars, mine needed to be sent back and altered. That was why I waited a couple of months before I decided to put it in, I let other people be the guniea pigs!

Alright well at least I am not alone. I emailed 944Racing with a link to this thread so perhaps they will help us out or give us the size of the other shaft.

I was under the impression that this was a direct replacement...no drilling required? Which cars wont this work on without modds??

So far we are all over the map. Mine is an 87 944S, Special Tool was an 87 924S, and Mike has an 86 951.

I was looking at the transmission numbers and thought about writing all the numbers down but I decided to clean up for the night.

And, didn't Damian say it didn't fit either--his is a modern car, so maybe that's why? All I need is to get a great deal and have to pay-up on the install.

Yeah, at this point you won't know until you get it apart.

Definately wouldn't have bought something that doesn't fit my car if I knew this in advance! And, I still didn't get it yet.

You guys bitch way too much. It fit fine on all the cars that I installed it on (86 951, 90 944S2, 89 944S2, 87 951, 85 944, 86 944), it takes a bit of emery cloth or sandpaper to clean off the shaft and to make sure that you're installing it straight so that it doesn't jam when you put it on. Its a TIGHT FIT, that's how it's supposed to be! If you want to, ream it out a bit, although it shouldn't be necessary. I had to use a little hammer to tap it on, but it wasn't tough. The toughest install was on the 89 944S2, someone actually used two part epoxy to stick the original factory part on. That was fun to remove/clean up! There have been over 500 of these SSK's sold and 99.9% of these SSK's have fit just fine. The ones that were "tough" to install were due to corrosion on the input shaft.

Remember, if you really don't like it you can send it back for a full refund, that is before you "modify" it. If you don't like it, then send it back.

This is the last time I'm going to put my neck out for you guys and start a group buy. Ingrates!

Those of you that haven't received it yet, when did that email say that you SHOULD get it by? Stop bitching! It said that you should get it by the labour day weekend. With the postal service it might be a bit later, but you WILL get it! If you don't want to wait, email them and cancel, if it hasn't shipped yet it should be an easy transaction, if it's shipped then you can wait, install it and be happy with a quality product at a GREAT price, or you can return the unopened package and get a refund.

Screw all you whiners.

Dal.

Hey, a little elbow grease to get the parts on is fine. I was worried that it would be a major project for the mechanic to bitch about and charge me double!

Waiting patiently and thanking Dal for the idea....

just wait until until you all get your ssk before assuming it wont work. mine dropped in fine. It took me longer to get the old stuff off than it took to put the new kit on.

Besides, has everything you have ever put to your car, used or new, fit perfect everytime, especially aftermarket?
doubt it.
