The 924S and 944 shared the same engine, the early model 944's (1983 - 1985) were the same as the '87-88 924S. The only difference in the later model 944's i believe were a change in the fuel hose routing. Lines were routed from the right fender rather than over the intake manifold.
The 924S was basically an early model 944, just without the widebody fenders. They used 15x6 wheels as opposed to the 15x7 wheels on the 944's. Other differences were the instruments, which had yellow fonts on the 944 and white on the 924S (pretty sure of this). The 924S was slightly faster than the 944 mainly due to weight differences. It was also more aerodynamic.

The 88 924S and 88 944 share the same engine, code M44/09. Same compression, same DME, everything, except the fuel hose routing as stated.
The earlier 924S, 86.5/87 share the same engine as the early 944, code M44/07 with lower compression and 8 or 10 less bhp.

Also, the 924S during its entire existance had used late offset wheels (52.3 mm) like the late 944, early offset steel A-arms in the front like the early 944 and aluminum trailing arms in the rear like the late 944.
